Cash Game Tabling Hands When All-in (5 Viewers)

In a cash game, when action is complete due to players being all-in, …

  • … all active players must table their hands immediately.

  • … players only need to table their hands at showdown to contest the pot.

  • … there is some other rule that governs the tabling of hands. (Please explain.)

I often don’t show until it is time to claim the pot. I know it’s fun for the other players to see the drama, but if I don’t have to give information I don’t want to give, I’m not going to in most cases.

I voted that the All-Ins have to show in my game. Just my house rule and one of the very few that is different than an avg casino.
I find that the suspense and people counting outs and such adds a little life to the game. Nobody ever talks about the all in when one guy didnt show.

I feel that the closer we can come to having rules that are similar to what our players experience in a card room make for the fewest problems.

That was my initial reaction too. But a home rule requiring tabling of hands is not going to run afoul of a casino cardroom rule where you only have to show if you are making a claim for the pot.

If one of your home game players tables his hand in an all in situation in a casino, he hasn't broken any rules, so there won't be any confusion. This, plus the added benefit of protecting newer/less experienced players (which every home game needs) outside of the casino makes it a palatable variation from casino rules.

...until he tries to insist his opponent should table his/her hand, too.

In the very few cash games we host, we always point out that it is not required to turn cards up in an all-in scenario. Because we run 95% tournaments, it is habit for most of our players.

We also put out a newsletter before some of our players went to Vegas for a work conference to help them remember the difference between cash and tournament play. Every little reminder helps (I hope).

I don't require you to show your hand unless you want to claim the pot. If someone says, I showed my hand, you have to show yours. I simply correct them. It doesn't happen very often. The few times it has there hasn't been a problem.

I use the standard "tourney must show, optional in cash games" when I host. I also encourage my cash players to table quickly if they think they have a chance to win the pot, and some cash players (like me) will often table when all in anyway.

I do not honor IWTSTH in my game, but as a trade-off and a little bit of fun, each player gets a Show'Em chip with their first buy-in, so they get one free look at somebody else's hand per session.
