Washing these by hand really wouldn't be that much effort imo. I would be willing to do it on the dirt cheap. Ultrasonic fades chip colors whereas hand washing doesn't nearly as much
I washed about 60 of the 25s by hand and it was a pain in the ass. I also washed about 5 of the 5s and said fuck this. I did 3brafks of the 5s previously but they weren't nearly as dirty.

Chips I've hand washed:
400 jack tourney chips from the most recent sale
100 hsi used 5s
260 live sahara 1s
100 live mgm fracs

It takes effort for sure but I really don't mind washing chips while watching TV after a long day.

Thanks bud, next time I get a batch that needs a good scrub I'll hit you up :) It's appreciated!

I've got an ultrasonic Jim. I haven't done shaped inlays but could do a trial run of a couple chips first. If you don't have a tight timeline, I can do it for the low low price of good chipping karma. Or a couple of secondary 25s :)

Thanks for the offer Erik :) I didn't actually expect to get as many offers as I did, love this place sometimes lol. I may have a couple extra secondary 25s, I gotta look. If I do they are the lighter green, I'm still looking for some darker greens.

I am happy to do it for free it just may take a few weeks to get to it. Got a lot going on, on the home front. If a few secondary 25s happen to make it I to the box, just icing on the cake.

Pics as promised. Yummy

Hey Jim, just an FYI, from someone who's cleaned hundreds of empress and other used chips:
  • An ultrasonic alone might not get all the crud out of the molds of these old casino chips that were in use for many years in the casino.
  • It might take several repeat cleanings and/or a follow-up cleaning by hand/toothbrush/toothpick, etc, in an ultrasonic to get them completely clean.
  • The best results for cleaning, whether by ultrasonic and/or by hand, are soaking/cleaning in a TSP solution in warm-to-hot water -- that will 'dissolve' the grease and crud away.
  • Although be careful of soaking times, as these chips can be prone to have water seep in under the inlay. (Although that can sometimes be fixed later by putting the chips in front of a heater/fan to evaporate the water.)

This is very helpful, thank you for the tips and advice :)

I'm not a pro, but I'm willing to try if you want me to. These were about the worst chips I've cleaned - this was @SJFCPK18's first set of chips that I cleaned for him as a "welcome to chipping" gift. Before/after ultrasonic, some needed a wipe with a magic eraser, and then the oil+water method.

Amazing turn around

That’s what all my $5/25s looked like
Cleaned my entire empress set by hand soaking them ultrasonic toothbrush like 900+ chips

Water creeps under the shaped inlays though after a bit in the water soaking gotta he crazy careful if you oil them

Not done with my full trial but had some luck with Dawn Powerwash.

The really dark one has actually cleaned up but unfortunately there was some fading after I had it sitting in the “soap” for hours. But it wasn’t that bad on the side that was up.

Both sides of faded chip but given the level of grime on that one I’m impressed with the results and almost anything was going to do damage to that chip.

We hand clean every single chip... ask @jpietrella about the JW $1s! Haha

Even the $5s weren't much better

These guys turned out fantastic... but it took A LOT of hours cleaning

Hot stamps are even more of a pain because you have to be very careful with the stamps.

But if you are careful, probably took me a week! Lol

Personally not a fan of chips cleaned in an US, I don't know if it's just that the ones I have bought over the years were on too strong of a setting or what but they often seem to have a rough texture to them.afterswards... This always starts a debate and not trying to go there.

We have cleaned around 40k chips one at a time by hand, yes time consuming but that's what we enjoy doing.

Hundreds if not Thousands of chippers use US cleaners and love the results. Just saying be careful with your treasures. We all have our means n methods. We use Oxi instead of TSP, some will swear that Oxi is harsh, others that TSP is harsh, either get the job done... some say Majic Erasers are basically sand paper, again personal preference but works for us!

This isn't a cheap hobby, there is no reset button, careful with your babies Folks!

Wish I took before pics, these are 60 years old...

They were nasty, years of sitting with hooker juice marinating them... took weeks to clean, but also how I come to call them mine, I didn't just buy them, I brought them back to life!

Most know Whites can be the worst!

These aren't more than a couple years old, but they clean up too! Just elbow grease and time!

Don't just own chips, make em yours!!

This is the most inspirational post about removing disgusting filth from poker chips that I've ever seen. Bravo!

I have a lot of respect for you guys cleaning that many chips. I've probably cleaned a couple thousand, give or take and I know the work involved. There should be a premium added to the cost of chips that were previously horrific and reincarnated into something that passes as an actual casino chip. I enjoyed doing it for a time, listening to podcasts, or watching something. Now my hands just ache lol.

Definitely painful when you sell a 1,400 chip set for cost. (Yes I acid that with a set I hand cleaned every chip in) another set I hand cleaned and sold to @Pinkdan at cost (only 500 but nasty old TRKs) but at the same time I also see it as a way of giving back to the community. Now clean chips are changing hands! Also we absolutely have bought some from other chippers that are already cleaned and oiled... not often! It is absolutely mind boggling to me how many people own racks and sets of dirty chips and seem not to care! Definitely by far more dirty chips than clean bought. But man how sweet it is when a rack comes in and can join a set right away, not get put in quarantine for a few days or a week! Its painful but that's our rule, they have to have a bath before they join the fam! Also keeps us on top of cleaning and not procrastinating!

I just take 20/40 at a time and spend a week cleaning a rack. IDK I enjoy it. And soaking in the arm and hammer detergent with oxi doesn’t fade anything I’ve seen, makes white super white, and doesn’t bother the stamp from the soak. I did 900 Jack $1s by hand over a few weeks. I’m watching something while I do it so it kills two things at the same time.

I kinda have to believe your statement on keeping them oiled and soft is a good thing too.

I definitely can only do 10 or 20 at a time. My hands start to hurt a bit after that.
