Since papergate I’ve been videotaping the packing up of outgoing shipments up to a final weigh in. I thought at the moment: “What if I was the seller? Who would believe me?” Initially I was using my phone but managing the files became cumbersome and recordings could be interrupted by phone calls etc.

I have switched to an insta 360 camera (that I already had) that I now use it on a monopod. No framing of shot. 1 button start and it captures all up to final weigh in.

When there’s no outstanding deliveries pending and everyone is happy I delete the videos from that camera.

It’s a moment of extra time to show an aggrieved buyer or insurance investigator that I possessed and packed the chips. The check in weight with USPS should correlate as well.

I recognize that it isn’t 1 continuous clip from packing to USPS drop off and chicanery is still possible but I usually don’t drop to USPS immediately after packing.

Particularly if you already have a 360 camera, GoPro or old cell phone it really is a convenient best practice to employ. If you’re using your main cell phone it’s a PITA.

Interesting. Would still pics suffice?
Or maybe you only do this on sales over $1k?
Some buyers would appreciate the confirmation, but I can see it becoming a hassle for the seller. Would you offer it as an additional service for a cost???

Oh I don’t do anything with the footage. I press a button to start and press button to stop. It’s there just in case and then deleted en masse when no deliveries are outstanding. The additional effort atop packaging is de minimus and the buyer doesn’t know (unless they see this thread in the future) that it exists.

I think this is a good idea. I’m a new chipper and started doing this on my purchases just recently, doing unboxing videos on new arrivals. Just one button press on the phone to start and stop. Delete the video once contents are confirmed fine. I figure it would help in making any claims to USPS if needed, as would your pre-shipping video. USPS claim process requires some documentation/proof when submitting the claim so your video would be especially helpful, for example if the package is lost or damaged.

I don’t do unboxing videos but I can start. Like you said it’s instant delete once all is ok so data management isnt hard.

I did it for a few sales shortly after paper gate, but stopped; its not going to matter at the end of the day.

Reading through that thread was wild and scary as a new chipper, was there ever a resolution or agreement on what most likely happened?

First barrel of chips I received I started recording once I felt the box really light. I thought I was going to find the box empty. Luckily everything was in order and I quickly deleted the video. I have taken pics of me wrapping and packaging some items I have sold but at the end of the day I don't know what good that would do if the package never arrives.

But sometimes packages show up like this:

I think unboxing videos are actually more important since you could in theory videotape packaging it up then just take it all out, repackage and ship.

The seller 99% likely scammed me. He sold some chips to a third party to fund the refund and I took a 50% of the original sale in the event he didn’t truly scam me…that was my offer I made initially after receiving paper, so I held to it even tho we all know what most likely happened :-(

I’ve done over 500 transactions. It’s the only time I’ve had a bad experience.
