I just realized, as I was thinking about the router table milling possibilities that it’s likely possible to be able to achieve many of the shaped inlay recesses by creating router table jigs.

I am not sure that anyone has tried this, or to use the router table milling method for anything other than a perfect circle.

There are people here who are a lot more technical than me, but is it possible? I think it is. Surprised nobody has tried this maybe they have.

Gear had a CNC router set up. Table set up might be tough as how do you know chip doesn’t spin a little in the jig? Just thinking of a hex inlay the ends are closer to the edge of the chip compared to the side of the hex. I could be wrong as this is all being discussed in my head with no photo.

Yeah, CNC is the way to go, but people achieve great circle results with router table (I am a drill press guy)

Oh I see what you are saying, one would have to keep the chip from rotating at all for it to mimic the shaped jig perfectly, which seems pretty hard.

Circle recess it doesn’t matter if the chip spins at all, it’s going to come out fine.

It is indeed!

That's not quite true. If the chip can spin, it can also move back-and-forth and/or side-to-side a little, which means the diameter of the cut will end up slightly smaller than expected. Also depending on how freely the chip spins, you may end up with something pretty non-circular. (Depends on the bit diameter)
