Rolling over my Bad Beat Jackpot? (2 Viewers)

At the monthly 25c/50¢ game I host, we take a "drop" to fund a progressive bad beat jackpot. Qualifier is; full house beaten by quads or better.

It hasn't hit in over a year and is getting very close to $1K. I'm thinking about capping it at $1K and rolling over subsequent "drops" into the next jackpot.

There's a minimum jackpot balance of $50 before any payout. If I do the roll-over there would at least be something in there when the first one pays out.

Has anybody done anything like this at their game? Any thoughts either way on this?

Ran this through ChatGPT and I kind of like the idea of a secondary jackpot now! We'd use a lower qualifier for the secondary; Flush beaten by Full House or better.

Jackpot Cap​

The primary Bad Beat Jackpot is capped at $1,000.

Secondary Jackpot​

Once the primary jackpot reaches $1,000, all additional jackpot contributions are directed to the Secondary Bad Beat Jackpot until the primary jackpot is won.

Reset​

After the primary jackpot is awarded, all future contributions resume funding the primary jackpot first.

I think that this idea could work. I would maybe just apply a slightly lower qualifier on the 1k pot though, and have the original qualifier on the new secondary pot. This way, the secondary jackpot will not continue to fill up as you keep trying to win the primary one. I hope that made sense.

I actually decided a couple weeks ago to cap the jackpot at $1000 and any contributions after that go to a Reserve Fund. When the bad beat hits, the Reserve Fund is immediately transferred over to the bad beat. Hopefully this will prevent the bad beat from ever being down to $0.

the group i play in does the reserve fund thing, but with a high hand instead of bad beat. bad beats are more likely to go unpaid for a long time (qualifier dependent, obviously).

How long has it taken normally in the past to hit the bad beat? Id much rather play in a game that has multiple promo opportunities/perks than one with a reserve fund.

Implemented the bad beat in January 2023 and it was taken down in May 2023, August 2023, and April 2024. It's been over two years since it hit.

Sure, more jackpots means more excitement, but it also means exponentially more rules, and eventually nobody understands them anymore. lol I love the reserve fund model not only for it's simplicity and less "rule bloat", but also because there's no depressing "reset" after payout.

I'm hesitant to expand the bad beat rules to account for a situation that may never happen again (jackpot over $1K). Two years between hits seems like a pretty rare situation to me.

EDIT: We do have a nightly high-hand jackpot as well.

What if instead of a dollar cap on the bad beat there was a time-based trigger that lowers the qualifier? Say, after a 1 or 2 year drought the qualifier is lowered from quads over full house to full house over full house?

my somewhat local casino ResortsWorld Catskills caps the BBJ at 100K, then the qualifier drops everyday until hit. So it is Quad5s until100K then after 100K Quads4s next day, Quad3s next day until lowest AAA22 however you must have pocket AA so in reality it is Quads over AAA full. Seems to work out ok so far. For you maybe drop qualifier every week until hit ...

Yes they drop the qualifying hand every month at my local as well, it’s a great way to keep jackpots smaller and drive excitement

This is kind of what I do.

My trigger is always the total $ in the BBJ.
1st tier is $500 Qualifier Aces Full then when it gets to $750 it drops down to Kings Full then $1000 it drops to Queens Full & then every $ after that rolls over to the next BBJ

For sure. Ive seen a few casinos that close down that do it this way for the BBJ fund (that the house doesnt steal LOL). Im pretty sure Oceans in Atlantic city got down to AAATT as the min before it hit.
