I've been using this schedule with success for a long time now, but I just recently started to wonder if it isn't better to just remove T100 and T500 at the same time.. For me that is smoother. So similarly to people doing 100 - 200, 100 - 300 when using T100 base set, can't I just do 1K - 2K, 1K - 3K? So I can skip the annoying 1500 - 3K.
Or is doing it like this in the later stages of a tournament a problem?

So like this:
25 - 75
50 - 100
75 - 150
100 - 200
150 - 300
Remove T25 - rebuy/addon break.
200 - 400
300 - 600
400 - 800
600 - 1200
800 - 1600
Remove T100 & T500
1K - 2K
1K - 3K
2K - 4K
3K - 6K* (last level)
4K - 8K* (last level)
6K - 12K (rarely reached)

It works, as does:

800 - 1600
1100 - 2200
1500 - 3000
remove T100/T500
2000 - 4000

Same number of levels, but more consistent increases.

True this is more consistent.
With the levels you presented though I would be forced to have a break before the actual chip-up. Because the time from first break to break after 1500-3000 would be well over 3 hours. That's a bit too much. Some in my group already feel that 2 hours is enough :p (between breaks).

Lately I also strated to color-up the T100 and T500 at the same time.
I then jump from 1000-2000 to 1000-3000 (instead of 1500-3000).
Works great.

I've always gone with
...
800/1600
10 min break and color-up
1000/2000
1500/3000
5 min break and color-up
2k/4k
...

Since there are so few T500 in play they are quickly colored off, so a short 5 min break is enough. I've never had any issues with this.

But if I have to choose between keeping the T100 around for longer than needed (BG's) or having lopsided levels (OP), I think I'd go with the latter.

When blinds are 1K - 2K, as a player, I'd like to be able to bet or raise to different increments, like 4000, 4500, 5000, 5500, or so. So I like the flexibility of leaving the T500s on the table for a few more levels.

Is that an important issue to your players? Maybe not, if the tournament is far enough along at that point, and there are only a few players left.

Hmm fair point that I did not consider, and it does make sense. No, we are usually more than just a few at 1K - 2K.

Seems like a good approach is the BG route and stretch the T100s until after 1500 - 3000 and then remove both at the same time. Or just go with the old one.

Personally, I'm not a fan of taking two denoms off the table at the same time. It either
  • If you round up, makes a lot of previous bets worthless, as a lone T100 is suddenly a T1000.
  • If you race, you need to run two races - one to get the T100s to T500s, then another to race the T500s.
It never hurts to keep T500s in play a little longer than necessary, as they don't tend to clutter the table.

I never round up. But racing is pretty fast once you are used to it and I don't see a problem doing it twice to be honest. But with rounding up, I agree it will be better to do the chip-ups more gradually.
