Tourney Rebuy Imbalance - 2TT (1 Viewer)

Hosted my quarterly 2TT on Friday night. An interesting issue came up. First off, the structure was 40k starting stack, 18 players, unlimited rebuys until the first break (90 mins), after the break, you can buy a $20 - 20k add-on.

Throughout the opening levels there were 11 rebuys. However, they were overwhelmingly from one table, either 9 to 2 or 8 to 3, can't remember which. Once we consolidated to a single table at 9-handed, there were a bunch of comments avout how the rebuy table had a ton more chips.

Is there a way to combat this as a tournament director? Or is it just part of the game?

Just part of the game. Only way I can see to combat this is to go to a freezeout.

Our league game last night was similar. 19 players and 5 rebuys (4 at one table). Just gave those of us from the "short" table targets when the tables consolidated.

You could do a seat redraw after like 5 rebuys. Not optimal but might help with balance of stacks at each of the tables. Or better yet, when someone gets felted make them switch tables with the other big blind next hand and rinse and repeat. Doing this only when rebuy balance is >2 between tables.

I actually really like this idea. Would not have worked on Friday, given that no one busted all the way out prior to the break. We didn't have an open seat to shift around.

When someone rebuys you treat it like an open seat and switch them. As long as you move the big blind next hand to the other table no one can bitch about paying an extra blind.

could you limit re-buys to 5 per table and then if both tables get to 5, the limit goes up another 5 or would that be a nightmare to administer?

I think I like the idea of changing tables if there is an imbalance. If there's a more than 2 rebuy difference, we have the rebuy player switch tables.

You can do whatever you want at your home tournament. But I like to point out the difference between rebuy and re-entry, from time to time.
In a rebuy tournament, you’re not out of the tournament just because you got felted. You stay in your seat, you give the dealer or floor your cash, and you continue with a fresh stack.
In a re-entry tournament, when you get felted, you’re out of the tournament. You leave your seat, go to the window, pay the cashier, and you’re given a new table and seat assignment, because you’re a new entry into the tournament.
Re-entries are raked, rebuys are not.
Every re-entry is counted as a new entrant, for the purposes of calculating how many people get paid. So in a tournament with a lot of re-entries, more people will cash, but the payouts will be lower.
Rebuys do not count as a new entry. So in a tournament with lots lot rebuys, fewer people will cash, but the payouts will be bigger.

Again, none of this applies directly to the question; it’s just a vocabulary lesson.
