I have been part of a group that likes to play a monthly poker game. It used to be a whole thing with a leader board, points for the last 8 players remaining and a final game where the top 18 players playing for all of the add ons accumulated for the entirety of the year. The structure differed slightly from house to house (three couple would rotate hosting) but by in large it was the same.

They have since disbanded the "league" but we still play on a pretty consistent monthly basis and the structure has largely remained the same.

For anyone curious on why the league disbanded, it was partly due to the game becoming too large. Each game had a hard limit of 27 people (3 tables) and they had collected about 50+ people who would shuffle in and out of the games. It was first come first serve and that of course caused infighting, politics, and discussions on whether or not hosts should be allowed to ban players they did not like. Also, having a monthly game for years took it's toll mentally and financially for the hosts.

At any rate here is the structure:

$40 Buy-In
$10 Add-On for 10,000 (Optional)

Unlimited Re-Buys till 2nd break

All levels 15 min
Breaks 15 min

L1 - 100 / 200
L2 - 200 / 400
L3 - 400 / 800
Break
L4 - 800 / 1600
L3 - 1000 / 2000
L4 - 2000 / 4000
Break - Chip up to 1000s - Add-Ons - No Rebuys
L5 - 4000 / 8000
L6 - 8000 / 16000
L7 - 10000 / 20000

I Accidentally submitted the original post before finishing the entirety of it:

I always thought this was a bit too turbo-y for my liking. You end up in the <10BB Range basically from L3 onwards with a starting stack and the all ins at L4 before no re-buys are left and right. The add-on seems mandatory and really only gives you one BB. If you are not dominating the table by L6 it pretty much becomes bingo poker.

Love the people but the format always felt weird.

That being said I was wondering how you all felt about this format and maybe give some suggestions on how to improve it. I am going to start hosting my own tournaments with basically the same people and would like to change things up to keep the game in the 10-20 BB range for longer, but I do not want to make to large of changes where people get out of their comfort zone.

Any time big jumps follow small ones or vice versa, that's a bad thing. Blind increases should be smoothly proportional throughout. I hate when blinds double except maybe in the first few levels, so I'm not a fan of this structure. It also seems like, even with lots of rebuys, the tournament would not reach those last few levels. That said, it could be fixed. Smooth out the first six levels so that players come back from the second break (which should probably be the first) with more big blinds. Then go from there.

It is as turbo, and the only way to change that is to make the tournament longer. If you wanted a smoother blind structure though which will end a bit later than the original, here is one for you. It has 50-67% jumps throughout, following a 2-3-5-8-12 pattern (with the exception of level 1).
