Wow that makes no sense.

They just burn and turn until someone makes a flush? No other hands make sense if they're sharing the cards that make broadway.

The query makes it obvious that you lack experience in such things. You assume that a flush beats a straight. Only spade flushes beat a straight. Otherwise it goes to the 6th card. Broadway +8 beats broadway +6.

I would never ever use my high-end chips for a game like this. They'll never appreciate them and you'll get tilted when they manage to destroy a few sonehow.
Also I'd never ever host anywhere else but your place. If they want to play/host they can invest in cheap table to go along with the cheap chips.

Ugh. I dislike "poker" nights like this ... if you want to call it a social night, let's get together, eat, drink, laugh, BS... sounds great, I'm there. But don't call it poker, because it's just not. Poker has rules. If the game you're playing doesn't use those rules, then it's not poker.

It'd be like playing "tennis" with 6 people on the court, everyone has 2 rackets and their own ball, and the lines don't mean anything. If the ball goes over the net you get 2 points. If the ball hits the net and drops you lose a point, but if the ball hits the net and still goes over you get 3 points. First to 61 points wins! Fun, right? Sure, maybe, and you're using tennis rackets and tennis balls on a tennis court.... but that sure as hell isn't tennis.

I remember I attended a game about 5-6 years ago for a tourney. I was at the hosts wife table and she acted like she knew everything about poker. 3 table tourney.

I then get moved because another player gets knocked out. An hour or so passes and she was knocked out. She comes up to me and taps me on the shoulder and says hay can we talk. God dammit. I say well I'm still playing. She says just a minute. I agree.

She then bitches me out again and says this is her house and she can do whatever she wants. I say calm down bit you cannot do what you did. I say you this is your house but those are poker tournament rules. Im not here to argue with you. I'm still in and need to keep playing. I sat back down and she hasn't liked me ever since.

Being clueless about poker or anything else is a human right.
Not wanting to play real poker but something close (like the excellent "tennis" example given by @Gear) is also a human right.
What's not a human right is being disobedient and inconsiderate to a host/organizer who invests effort, time and property to run a game according to the game's rules. That 's plain rude, gross and offensive.
It's been a reason for me to terminate friendships completely. I don't expect from people to like poker, I only expect some respect.

It sounds like if you ever play with this crowd again (and I wouldn’t, but if you do), you should host it on your own turf. That way they can’t use the “this is our house, we’ll do whatever we want” excuse to turn your game into a travesty of poker.

Ugh. And this is why I micromanage the shit out of my game. I've been to games like this. I've been in your sons exact spot of paid spots getting changed on the fly and getting shafted. It's infuriating.

Some of my guys bust my onions at my micromanaging of our game. But they know I've literally lost sleep (I'm a nighttime thinker when going to bed, like many of us I'm sure) sometimes covering every last minute detail of a tourney and they bust my balls because they appreciate it.


I do it so that people like your son don't come to my game and feel they got the short end of the stick.

That's BS. Don't ever host with them again. Definitely put up a pdf with your rules and what you're going for. The ones that want to play will appreciate it.

Don't do any singling out in your post (obviously) but point out you're just trying to make a fair game for everyone.

I have a very good friend who likes to host at his place from time to time. He isn't as organized as my games, and asked me if I would bring over my chips and help him out. I made it very clear that I would, under the condition that I ran the poker, he ran the party. He agreed and it went off without a hitch. I would suggest that if you haven't already run far from this game that you make a similar arrangement if you decide to go back.

I played in a game for about 2 years that was just terrible. Not as bad as the OP, but bad. Dice chips, terrible table toppers in public restaurants... just bad games with otherwise great people.

So I poached the best of the best from that game, including the host, and that game collapsed.

3 years later, the host held her own game again this past weekend. 3 years playing with my CPC, mint Paulson THC, and other good to great chips. Padded poker tables, Copag, KEM, Bicycle Prestige, and Desjgn cards. 3 years, and this is what we got.

How do people not notice a difference?
