I know. Im a bad owner. But this is how she wishes to be. She is disgusting.

She's getting shaved this week. And she is very upset about it. Very.

We recently lost our 13.5 year old lab. So for the first time in 16 years, we do not have a dog. I love dogs and look forward to having them again, but I also need a break for a second. My kids and wife would prefer we already had one or more puppies.

Yesterday my 10 year old declared “I can’t believe we are the kind of people who don’t have a dog”

Sigh…..

Sorry to hear Pat. We were in the same boat about 2 years ago, we suddenly lost our Boston Terrier at 12 years. It was the first time in 20+ years my wife and I didn't have a pooch around, and the first time the kids didn't have one ever. It was a tough stretch, I got lots of similar comments from the kids, but we 100% needed the break. My oldest was getting ready to go away to school and we had 1000 other things going on, it just wasn't the right time.

Give it some time for things to mend, they'll appreciate it even more when everyone is ready.

Thank you Matt - really appreciate the sentiments and perspective

I will add - if you're "dog people", and it sounds like you are :), you'll eventually come around and will know it when the time is right. It took a little over a year for things to align for us, we picked up Cosmo last summer as a pup (an incredibly small pup!) and he's been driving us nuts with puppy energy ever since :)

I lost Blue in 2023.... and I haven't been ready for another dog. I miss him terribly. It is definitely a process and waiting for the right time is so important.
Condolences to those above who have lost their pups, and congrats for adding a new member of the family again.

About to say goodbye to Shadow tonight. She’s 17. Been in my life since 2019 and been in my fiancé’s since 2008 (she was my fiancées first cat at 12 years old).

Never thought I could get this sad losing a pet. I lost pets when I was younger but this is the first pet having to make all the tough decisions for and I’ve been crying like I never have before. Heartbreaking but we know it’s for the best.

I once faced a similar situation and read something that helped a little … “It’s far better a week too early, than even a day too late.” It is a difficult thing that I am about to go through again myself with our 13 y/o Lab mix. But, I feel it is our obligation to guard against their suffering. I’m so sorry.

I'm so sorry to read this @Sap ...
My thoughts are with you, your fiancée and shadow.

Our rescue, Amandine (we kept the name they gave her), is now 3 years with us.

She appeared on the shelter's website the day we lost Princess. Few months later, she was not adopted yet and we decided to do it.

She was (and still is) fearful but we manage to build confidence and she now trusts us.

@Sap so sorry that you are going through this. God has allowed you to go through this, so that you can help someone later going through the same thing. It definitely doesn’t mean we have to like it. I will be praying for both of you!

I have 3 dogs:

Winston (boxer)
Shasta (Sammoyed)
Yoda (Yorkie?)

Winston is our 'Covid' dog. Bought him to cheer up the family. He's my third boxer. The other two were about 20 years ago.

Shasta was my dad's dog. He passed in 2024. We weren't sure Winston would tolerate her because he gets jealous. They get along pretty well, so we were able to keep her.

Yoda is our old timer. He's blind and seems to have a bit of dementia sometimes. He's a rescue so not sure how old he is. We're guessing in his teens.
