Thank you to all in this forum for the info that has helped me improve and elevate my home game. I introduced tournaments into my home game this past summer after 7yrs+ of cash only games. We just finished our first tournament points based season and it was a big success. One thing we would like to change is the rebuy structure. Part of the initial desire to introduce tournaments was to neutralize the donkey play of one of the newest members who plays like cash is free. Last season we allowed only 1 rebuy regardless of level. However, because of the points involved it turned out that any of the points competitive players would rebuy regardless of level.

There is desire to cutoff rebuys at a specific level now. I am just unsure of the theory behind the determination of what level to use for the cutoff. Also, unlimited or limited rebuys? Also, would this change if we moved to a two table ~16 player game assuming all else is equal (we may open up a second table because we are turning people away)?

9 players, 10k + 1k bonus, ~3.5hrs

I would cut the rebuys after the level where the rebuy amount is <= (SB + BB + total antes if any) x 20.
In other words, stop the rebuy period when the rebuy amount represents a M (see Harrington) lower than 20.

So in your case, I would cut it after level 5.

I don't cut off rebuys - there's a point where a rebuy will only get you a few BB so it's not really sensible to do so but if someone wants to throw practically dead money into the prize pool, who am I to stop them? What I have done is limit rebuys to 2 per player to stop one friend from buying the game.

I’ve always wanted to try this. I suppose that at some point you have to call it so that you can calculate the payouts, but I can’t imagine someone would still want to rebuy this late in the structure.

Can get really dicey once three-handed. Being the short-stack and trying to wait it out no longer works.

Even if re-buys are allowed late into the event, I recommend cutting them off after the money bubble hits.

I agree. It seems not doing this is a flaw actually. Say the first money position is 4th and that guy takes that prize. Then someone with a rebuy left gets busted in 3rd and uses a rebuy, does the 4th place guy get paid a share of that buy in? Is the 3rd place guy not gambling as high because he is guaranteed 3rd place money?

but if someone wants to throw practically dead money into the prize pool, who am I to stop them?

And while I respect this line of thinking, tournaments are designed to eliminate players so there is one winner. Not having a clear cut off means you have to answer the questions I posed above.

But of course in my opinion,If you want to play unlimited rebuy, play cash :P.

To the original question 20-30 blinds is fine, just use a break for convenience.

I like the original structure, go right between level 5/6 and advertise as "rebuys for first 90 minutes" (5 levels of 15 minutes plus 15 min break.)

Back when I allowed rebuys I always ended them at the first color-up break. It's the most convenient way IMO. If starting with 10k I ended it after 150/300. If starting with 15k I adjusted the structure to have a 250/500 level just to push back the break until it was reasonable to end rebuys.
