New Poker Room Construction (Suggestions, Feedback & Insults Welcome) (2 Viewers)

Definitely useful to have some counter space/cupboard space to put the chips that are not in use and or set racks out while you organize starting stacks etc. You could put in cupboards with glass doors so you could see the chips you have stored in them so it becomes a display of sorts.

If you want side tables you can build them pretty easily/cheaply. I don't remember who came up with the design but you basically just use one 6 foot x 12 inch board and cut it into the pieces. You also need to get a small 1x4 piece and some wheels and you're set per cart. Maybe @justsomedude came up with those sidetables?

Have plenty of outlets for people to plug their phone chargers in or integrate that into the table if you want to get really fancy.

Cork looks nice, but will not hold up to chairs sliding back an forth. Used it in my kitchen and regret it.

This is a good point. I don't think cork is ideal for high traffic/high wear areas. I used to work in flooring so it is the one weird niche I know a bit about. There are always new developments though so a new product could come out that is awesome.

I think vinyl plank wears well and looks awesome. It is also easy to install. If the floor is flat you could likely do it yourself.

As OP mentioned berber carpet is a good option too and should hold up well.

Never mind the incomplete table, but I would never put berber carpet in this room again. It was not cheap carpet so it "technically" has not worn, its hard to tell in these pics but with chairs constantly being used/pushed/pulled the texture of the carpet is non existent. It has become completely flat and smashed down. Berber carpet is generally not "soft" and with the texture smashed down that doesn't help.
My next carpet for this room will be definitely be either some fun crazy casino pattern carpet or at least a smooth flat commercial type. Nothing with texture because chairs constantly drug across the texture will ruin that.

Now depending on how much you use the room and what else you use it for YMMV, but mine is dedicated to only poker and gets used a lot.

Hi Dudes,

Overwhelming support and contributions so far. Awesome community here without a doubt.
We are moving along nicely with the tapping and mudding of the Sheetrock. Unfortunately, once the recesses for the flatscreens were sheetrocked it was impossible to hide from the wife that three 55" TVs will be surrounding the table.

TVs have been mentioned on this thread. I will use the screens for blind timer display, music videos, movies and sports.
Sound: My games are attended by mostly suburban super-dads (including myself). We play Friday nights (usually) from 9PM to 2AM. It is easier for the dads to have our No Ma'am meeting, as the wives refer to it, once he kids are asleep. Ceiling Speakers would allow too much sound to travel into the upper levels of the house IMO. I will most likely be using a SONOs 5.
BAR: I will have one 'wet bar' with sink and an under-counter beverage fridge, and another wine dedicated bar with an under-counter wine fridge. The wine bar's counter space will most likely be the snack and food area. None of my players have ever asked to pop a pino on poker night.

Storage: as far as general and poker related storage I will have drawers and cabinets under the bar and wine counters. I will also have a locking door that leads to the HVAC and utilities that will store other items. Not to mention the Basement bedroom that has a walk-in closet.

I am most likely going to break-up the ceilings by painting the 2 large soffits.
I also need to find some nice artwork. Probably movie related since our poker nights are spent talking about movies and music. I love Tyler Stout's Movie posters, but can't afford many at once.

I get the cabinets delivered tomorrow, and hope to be laying tile over Thanksgiving weekend.

Thanks for the support guys!
Keep you updated.

Hi Irish, glad you picked-up my No Ma'am reference!
Good question about the non-drywalled surface.
That wall will be ship-lap. I am also doing a ship-lap wall/ back splash behind the wet bar and wine bar.
I feel the change in texture will help warm the room up, and add heightened visual interest. no homo

The low pile crazy design patterned carpet used in casinos is very expensive. That is commercial carpet that is a whole different level of quality than what is used domestically.

If you can get that quality of carpet in your poker room it will not only look awesome but it will last forever. A good option is also carpet tile. Very easy to install and it is also generally a commercial product so it holds up very well to use/abuse. Carpet tile has the added feature of being modular so you can fairly easily pull out a stained piece (typically 24"x24") and replace it with a new tile - presto - stain dealt with. Generally you can clean it but worst case scenario replacing a tile isn't a big deal.

I would recommend a carpet tile or a hard surface. I understand hard surfaces feel less warm and cozy but that is just the trade off. No high pile plush cozy carpet is going to wear well. They all end up smashed down depending on the amount of wear.

PS. if you are just doing one room I would recommend trying to buy some product from one of the clearance places or Home Depot. Don't go to a retail flooring company as their prices are inflated.

Oh this is going to be amazing. Can't wait to see it finished.

Nice, I find accents like this really add character to a room, looking forward to seeing it take shape. And Al Bundy for the win!

Progress!
1) drywall complete, primed and first coat of paint applied.
2) cabinets assembled.
3) shiplap accent walls and backsplashes installed (not yet painted).
Next:
1) take a few days off work to tile the bathroom.
2) schedule carpet installation.
3) trimwork and baseboards
4) electrical outlets, switches, dimmers, and recessed trim.
5) Figure out a way to pay for all this.

I have had to compromise on the style of carpet. Once the installer came to measure (1364 Sq Ft) for the amount of material that would need to be ordered I immediately knew an expensive carpet wouldn't be happening. So I am going with a $3100.00 job instead of the $6000.00 job.
I was also gonna buy a fancy, modern shitter, but I'll be getting the $268.00 single piece, elongated instead.
Keep you guys updated...

Question for those in the know:
I will have a desktop connected to one of the TVs. I want to display the blind timer on one of the 55-inchers.
What is a good timer that can be fun on windows?

I'd recommend Tournament Director, a personal license runs $40. If you only need a very basic timer, there are a few web based ones like Blind Valet (I think that one's free).

Start with Blind Valet - it's free (with ads) and may fit your needs. For $6/month you can customize it, but then you should consider Tournament Director for a 1-time fee of $40.

But one thing still confuses me about your room design - where does the hot dog roller go? Am I missing something?

I love there poker room build threads. I need to do the same thing. I have a full unfinished basement just begging for a poker game!

Sorry about dropping the ball on my Poker Room updates, but I have just about completed the project! I need to do a few finishing touches and hang a shower door. Please check out the latest pics. For a basement with only one bedroom window I was able to keep it bright and open.
