If you are convinced that this is a long term hobby or more, and if you have the money now then buy a nice set somewhere between 1,200 - 2,500ish. Occasionally you can find an incredible deal. If you don’t have the money now, start saving a little bit per week/month and skip the lesser quality sets. Then take @Mushmanchuman up on his offer (very generous)! You’ll thank me/everyone that agrees later. It’ll be worth it in the long run.

If you truly just want to dip your toes in the water, then for a couple of hundred dollars you can find your way into China Clay or Ceramic chips and you’ll be very happy with them as long as you don’t wind up too far down this rabbit hole (speaking from experience).

That all said don’t hesitate to reach out to so many of these “fine” people with questions, specific or general.

Welcome! as others have said, samples are your friend. Don't feel like you need to reach for Paulsons right away, plenty of other ceramic options available for starting the hobby that i'm sure will make you much happier than the standard blank dice chips. personal opinion is avoid metal slugged chips (monte carlos, dice chips, etc) there are tons of options from China clays or ceramics that won't kill your budget and still feel elevated.

I would highly recommend seeing if your college has any student-run poker interest groups. I ran a similar club back in college and it helped me quickly build a large player base.

Yeah I returned the chips as soon as I found out they were shipped to me. Police chalked it up as a misunderstanding. DM me if you want the full story, it is quite an interesting one.
