Hi everyone,

New here - Got a question:

Would you prefer no value chips or valued chips?

Personally i bought NVC because it let´s me use the chips for both cash game and tournaments.
In my mind that´s a no brainer, but i see many posts where people prefer the valued chips.

Welcome!

I played dice chips for years where there was no denomination on them. It was nice having the flexibility to play whatever value we wanted while we started out but everyone always forgot the value after a few drinks and it just became a pain. I’d recommend getting a separate cash and tourney set if you have the means. It’s just one less thing to think about when playing and you’ll get an added layer of security.

2 different sets makes sense.
We ususally play the same small group, and everyone gets to know the values on the chips.
But yes, after a few drinks it could get messy :D

I completely understand the flexibility argument for NCV chips, especially if you have limited budget and looking to get the best material chips possible.

But I, personally, would have to restrain myself from strangling the person that asks "what's this chip worth again?" for the 3rd time in one session.

^....this even with regular poker players I got this question a few times last time I put a non denomationed chip into play.

And depending on the company you keep, there is a security concern. A high value cash chip may sneak into the pocket of someone during tournament play.

I prefer denominated chips, but I there are legitimate reasons why someone might prefer ND chips.

However, using the same chips for both tournaments and cash games is not a legitimate reason IMO and is a problem waiting to happen.

Whenever your budget allows, get a separate set (or at least separate colors in the same style) so you can have different chips for tournament and cash.

When you say NCV on poker chip forum, I think most of us think of casino tournament chips, which have a denomination on them without a currency symbol, and have “no cash value” printed on them in fine print.

It sounds like you’re comparing chips with numbers on them to chips with nothing on them, usually referred to as non-denominated chips.

My opinion, I’ll never use chips without numbers again (with the possible exception of having a single non-denominated chip that can be used as the smallest chip - 25 cents for example.)

If however you are referring to chips with NCV printed on them, my preference is to use them strictly for tournaments. But to each their own.

I strongly prefer denominated sets. The only non-denominated set I have is for limit poker, and that's because everyone is given 100 chips of the same value. This lets me play limit games at different stakes with the same chips.

You are correct, I actually meant to say non-denominated (I thought they where the same as NCV).

Yeah i am pretty new to hosting cash games at home and it’s a nightmare with people constantly asking chip denoms. Even though we play every week… i’m looking to get my first valued set soon

I like denominated chips on their own merits, but the fact that they solve this problem is a nice bonus. Gets really really really really tiring having to explain this over and over, especially when it's to the same person.

Most of the time it’s my own girlfriend LOL

Honestly, your logic is spot on. NCVs (non-denominated chips) are definitely more flexible — you can tweak values depending on the game, the stakes, etc.

Buuuut… I’m human, and humans are not known for being 100% logical creatures.

Despite the flexibility argument making perfect sense, I personally prefer using chips with denominations printed right on them.

Sure, it’s less efficient. If you go the denomination route, you’ll need way more chips to properly cover different games and structures. (At some point, the amount of chips in my chip cases started looking like I was preparing like a prep-per for the end of the poker chip world.)

But I accept that inefficiency with open arms.

Because at the end of the day, there’s no sweeter sound than NOT having to answer for the hundredth time, “Hey, how much is this one worth again?”

(And no, nobody ever seems to remember after you tell them the first 12 times.)

In short: Logic says NCV. My personal taste — and my sanity — says denominations. It’s one of those irrational preferences that I embrace and have zero plans to correct, and if makes me buy more (moar) chips, well then, the better that decision is (For Me)
