Thread question specifically about luminescent markings, not physically damaged cards.

This came up in the Dal Negro group buy thread, I dont want to spam that thread so started this one.

I guess I always knew magicians sometimes use marked cards, and sometimes you'd hear about marked cards in a casino or high roller home game.
After just looking at their website salemakredcards.com im a little like WTF, am I being paranoid? you hear about low stakes cheaters, we all probbaly know at least one.

So I'm thinking of buying some glasses to read luminescent markings, and doing a quick check of cards in play at home games now.

Does that sound crazy?

Feels like if you know what your regular game uses for cards, it wouldn't be too hard to swap a deck out.
Or even just mark a couple with the luminescent ink.

I’m super paranoid as well. I thought a good way to overcome this paranoia was to have the glasses as well, or even the contacts just to prove it. Also, it’d be kind of cool if when the host invited the high stakes games he would offer the guests to bring the playing cards and you would rotate the cards in from the guests.

Like cheating/marking cards is something new???

These type of marked cards have been available for a long, long time. You should always be aware of where the cards in your game are coming from.

Honestly I'm more afraid of games where the cards have been in play for numerous sessions and have had plenty of chances to be marked by hand/nails/other means.

Guess it wouldn't hurt to check your own cards if you are unsure abut them  but it might raise a few eyebrows if you show up to other games wearing goggles. :D

Brother Matt! I found this short video very informative and I think it’s right up your alley bud

Even funnier that the picture kind of at first reminded me of @kirchhausen haha!!

In all seriousness… is it really hurting anything to buy the glasses and check? I mean I’m not sure what the glasses cost, and even then if they are $1,000… over time does a thief not have the potential to take even more than that off of you?

You could make a poll, but I would say go ahead and order the kind that attach directly to the aluminum hat!

See ya soon brother!!

Thanks for helping anyone on PCF buy marked cards MATT....

I don’t think it’s crazy at all.

But here’s where my mind goes next - now you’re bringing a cheating tool to a game. Obviously I’m not accusing you. But what would you think if you found out some guy brought cheating glasses to a game?

Big $$$ game the cards should be brand new and still in the wrapper. Sure it’s a cost, but should be a necessary one? I guess that’s open to everyone opinion of high stakes. I know at @Goldfish game, they have new cards every single game… even on “Go Fish, strip poker for $100 a pair” night

Brand new cards in the seal = nothing. That’s how these marked cards come…that’s all part of the deception!

Being that he wears glasses I could understand that… but for someone that doesn’t, also the glasses could be locked in a box in front of everyone… I would think for transparency that Inwould tell everyone I had them Just to check and then they get put away where not accessible.

Yeah just randomly sitting in your shirt pocket and you wear glasses… I could see that going over like a wet diarrhea fart in church…

Well it would be just to inspect the home’s game.

Obviously not something you'd wear while playing, but a cursory scan of the deck being used would be good. then put them away.

I'm actually thinking should be mandatory at any game where thousands are in play

Sounds like you need to find another game to play in if you're seriously considering this.

Found out in the last few months of someone cheating that you'd have NEVER expected to be a cheat.

Not a game I frequent very often but I have played with the cheat quite a few times. They weren't using IR glasses.

This was a 1/1 PL game

Exactly. Poker and gambling opens yourself up to certain people who think cheating is acceptable bc it’s all part of the lore. Think of all the movies that embrace the hero who cheats out the villain or “marked” players.

It's a shame. A host shouldn't have a problem with this if you have suspicions. I would give the host/game runner a heads up if you do this, unless you think the host is the cheat.

A legitimate concern, especially if you play in several higher stakes home games.

I just wanted to use that gif

I know 1/1 is low stakes, but cheats will cheat, not sure they care what the stakes are.
I just commented in a message,, that cheats are opportunists. What could be safer than doing it at a low stake home game with trusted friends and lots of drinking,

The cheat I mentioned wasnt using marked cards, but more manipulating the deck/ discards.

The luminescent marking is obviously more sophisticated, and takes a lot more planning. Ina 1/1 or .25/.50 home game thats probably not a concern, But you never know.

Truly big $$$ games should have a factory in house where all players can watch the cards be cleanly manufactured to ensure no foul play.

But to the serious point, cheaters cheat. They’ll always find a way. Bringing a device which can be used to cheat, in order to catch cheaters, kind of just shows that you have a knowledge of cheating. I’d probably have a thought in the back of my mind like dang, I wonder how this guy came across this cheating method, and which other ones does he have access to?

I had a friend whose wife downloaded Tinder to try and catch him on there. They had a huge fight when he saw she had Tinder on her phone, not only because of the implication of her having it, but also that she was using it to try and catch him doing something that he wasn’t (to my knowledge) doing.

Stay vigilant, play with people you trust, hope for the best/mentally prepare for the worse. (From a paranoid person that barely plays poker anymore.)

Swapping decks out would be pretty simple, as odd as it might be to do at a friendly home game. I dont think host should take it personally.

But they might I guess.

More details, plz

As far as the decks go... The site the OP linked only shows four brands of cards available for cheaters. They are some of the most common brands; but you could just buy the host some Faded Spades or Desygn decks and not have to worry anymore.

Details plz

It was a friend of friend on here, not my story to share really ( even though based on what happened, I and several others probably lost money to the cheat )
Cheater is no longer playing

It’s very easy to swap out a deck, introduce a juiced deck, specifically during a bomb pot.

Again the best way to overcome this would be for the guests to bring in their own cards.

I’ve also seen additional cuts can be made at any time. After flop, before turn, before river.

This would help prevent RFID cheating that can tell the entire 52 card lineup but NOT marked cards.

I showed guys whom I've been playing with for 20 years that you could buy decks of marked cards off of Amazon and for months after as I had big win nights I kept hearing comments about marked cards and special glasses. It got to a point where I finally had to really flip out on my friend after a comment he made which came out in a non joking way. You would think that bringing attention to the issue would make you less likely a cheater but it actually was the reverse.

*We always thought you were a cheater @MatB now we know

Could have it been the red glasses you were wearing?

Just confess here and we wont tell anyone....

But really, the paranoia is real. especially when money is concerned and combine that with multiple losing sessions.
and of course, sometimes the paranoia is justified.

anyone know if a UV light would expose the marked cards?

Could always get a cheap UV flash light as a quick and transparent check vs the glasses?
