Hi,
We play a cashgame with 5-9 players and 0.25 small blind. We've always played a standard set of plastic and would like to upgrade the chips for a special occasion.
I have a budget of 0.50 per chip and would like 500 chips. I came across this offer https://pokershop.de/THE-NUTS_2. But found some posts that there's better quality chips available for that price. Can you please give a hint in where to look on the forum member or thread where I can find these higher quality chips?

You may want to continue exploring options on pokershop.de if your budget is €250.

For example, here are well-regarded chips from Sun-Fly, a forum vendor:

https://www.pokershop.dk/shop/lucky-dragon-455c1.html

Unfortunately, they cost the equivalent of €0.80 per chip

I would decide on the game type and chip count, then add more money to the budget and move up to a completely different league. I’m pretty sure that if you spend money on chips now, you’ll end up replacing them anyway.

Hi and welcome! Check this thread by @Machine especially when it comes to chip breakdown:

That decision has already been taken. We want cash game chips. Both fine to have them with or without denominations. But a lot of the ones without denominations in this price category are not that pretty. We like to play with big piles, so a lot of small chips. 200x0.25 200x1 50x5 and 50x25 is more than enough. Budget is non negotiable, since it's a present. So either I buy the nuts set, or you guys say there's something better with a group buy, or someone has a big pile of chips he wants to get rid off.

Your breakdown needs some adjusting, the 25s aren't very playable. For 500 total and lots of lower denoms, go with

150x 0.25
200x 1
100x 5
50x 25

The edge finishing on those nuts chips looks bad. 😑

Edit. Here is a properly finished plastic chip for comparison.

It’s your call, of course, but typically, a lot of chips just end up sitting unused on the table. In other words, you want to save money, yet you end up spending cash on unnecessary denominations.

You are almost guaranteed not to need more than 100 of the $0.25 chips.

Check out the forum; there are tons of threads here with great breakdowns for any type of game.

Thank you for the advice. Will adjust a bit with the denominations. With regards to the edges, are the Monte Carlo cash chips from poker merchant any better?

Unfortunately this type of issue with the edges is very common with Chinese plastic chips. Not because they can't finish chips properly, but because vendors tend to want a lower production cost in order to offer chips at a certain price point and/or increase profit margins.

Inside the EU I think you are pretty much limited to the vendors you have already visited, anything of higher quality would need to come from a chip enthusiast via something like the classifieds here. But at 50 cents ea your options would still be extremely limited.

One option could be to put in an order for something referred to as Tina hybrids (ceramic chips with a label in the center). I don't know how much a direct order would cost, but some people in the EU have gone that route. Another option could be to get the nuts chips and put in some work with a hobby knife / sandpaper to make the edges more acceptable.

I‘d say they are even worse. I think your best option for that budget would be to find a used set of china clays like Pharaos, Majestic etc. When you buy them on Pokershop.de you will be over budget.

Another option would be Tinas but I have no experience with that. You can find a lot of info about them in the forum.

I have done this with my old tourney set of claysmith chips. It is a lot of work but it does make the chips feel a lot nicer. Still plastic chips of course but it helps! You gotta be careful and use very fine grit to not round them.
