Tourney Invites for Single Table (1 Viewer)

5 handed holdem play is so much better than 10 handed. If I had to rank the # of players, it’s as follows:

6
7
5
8
4
2
3
9
10

Play two tables and combine at 9 (play 5/5 until someone eliminated)
Pretty close to my ranking. The last two spots are identical!

As I wrote above, I'll never go back to having 10 per table in MTT:s. However, if I ever were to only get 10 players for an event, the social aspect might skew me towards jamming everyone into one table instead of 2×5, even though 10 is last on my list.

1. I have the space and chips to run a two table.

2. Not ever going to use alternates for a single table. Don't think that concept works (at all) but especially when we have rebuys the first two hours.

3. I'll have to think about trying to do two tables as my normal go to. Not sure I have quite enough players for that yet. I do not want to start a two table with only 6 handed. If I can't have 14 or more than I'd rather play one table. However, I am going to ask my crew tomorrow what they would prefer. Maybe i'll be surprised?

I think if you consistently turn away regulars, I believe you'll end up back at your original problem. I follow the philosophy that if your game isn't growing...its dying, and I would imagine your players would rather have the chance to play than worry about how many tables there are.

At my game, I play 8 players, squeeze 9 players at one table and split to two tables at 10. Two 5 handed tables will see more action and re-buys than a single 10 table. I agree, 11 players sucks the big one.

I use E-vite.com for my invitations and its been working pretty well. Free to use and sends out pretty cool looking invites over email or text.

Interesting take but its a bit meaningless in this context. To say that 2, 3, 4 handed is better than 10 handed is totally irrelevant when we are talking about setting up a tournament.

From the OP, you mentioned a couple things that surprised me...had a problem getting “only” 8 for a single table tourney, and you had interest if 11-12 but didn’t want the hassle of wrangling more players for a 2-table tourney. 12 is enough for a great tourney

Personally I prefer a 10 player table over two 5s for Holdem.
  • Everyone is there to be together. Separate tables, even in the same room, always have 2 different conversations going.
  • Table consolidation is easy if everyone is at the same table to start.
  • Dynamics of play (hand ranges) constantly loosen up during the night as you drop from 9 opponents to 2, but players may tighten up as you get to the bubble and pay jumps. This requires constant reassessment for best play.
If playing circus games, then 5-player tables are better as it allows for more game options in Dealer's Choice.

My opinion FWIW ~ Go with 2 tables. Whether starting 2 tables at 10 or 11, your game is better off with more players. If your game is "blocked," meaning someone who wants to play can't get in, and that happens a lot, someone else will start a game they will go to because the market seems to demand it. That could easily kill off your game.

We've had some great tournaments with 11, 12, and 13 players. I'd rather have 16-18, but I'm not going to complain about a smaller number. It seems like you are forcing a smaller number for no real reason. Go with a second table!
