You could collect a typical artwork fee in a separate transaction. If in a year you haven't found the asshole, everybody gets that money back.

Edit - Assuming the artwork is still his.

Yeah... not sure I feel comfortable with that. I appreciate the idea though. Let me do a bit of research and come back to this thread.

Intellectual property doesn't work that way. There is no "typical artwork fee." And it's not the buyers who would be most at risk -- it's the company producing the chips which could lose everything it owns.

It's possible GOCC licensed the artwork and has the rights to produce and sell chips per the licencing agreement. If true all would be kosher and the graphic designer would see whatever compensation per said agreement. It is also possible GOCC outright purchased the design.

Probably the best path forward is to inquire of GOCC what are the exact licensing rights for the design with original graphic designer.

As a designer this is something I encounter from time to time.

Since GOCC claims to own the artwork and they are the printer, the risk is all on them in that regard. Fire this one up.

(And get a design for a nickel...)

I’m inquiring with both GOCC and have reached out to Michael. I should have an answer tomorrow. If we are good, I’ll circle back here to confirm and then start an official group buy thread.

According to the holdempokerchips.com web site, the artwork was designed by Greg Cagle (TenPercenter, the owner of chiptalk.net). Good luck getting in contact with that asshole.
I knew about the Pharaoh design of the Paulson set but had no idea this was also credited to him. Maybe he owes GOCC money and this is how they plan to collect :)

"Credits for These Chips
This set was conceived and designed by Greg Cagle of Plano, Texas. Known as TenPercenter (Debaser555 on Stars). Greg is the proprietor of Chiptalk.net, the world's premier poker chip discussion site, and has also tirelessly promoted fine chips and group buys of custom high-end chips. Fortunately for us, Greg's first set of custom chips -- these Egyptians -- is still available in limited supply.

Greg's creation was produced by Chipco, the premier manufacturer of injection-molded, full-graphic "ceramic" chips. These chips are distributed by Holdempokerchips.com (mspatton on Chiptalk.net)."

Update: no response from Michael yet. GOCC is checking again to make sure they’re able to reproduce the chips. Looks like I won’t hear until Monday now, but I will keep you all posted when I know more.

Thanks for your patience.

How did you try to contact Michael he sucks ass at responding to emails. You might have to actually give him a call.

^ agreed. He has always been prompt and courteous in our interactions.

If you guys are into this Egyptian themed chipset, and can’t get permission for this specific artwork for the dude that @BGinGA apparently so deeply respects  :ROFLMAO:, there are some very talented people on this site who can help you modify the designs and come up with an even better set.

I’m going to give him a couple of days. I don’t even respond in 24 hours sometimes :)

Well, ya gotta hold somebody in high regard who was responsible for making the following great chips available to chippers everywhere at reasonable prices, while also dealing with all of the bs that BCC was capable of dishing out:

all T-mold chips, including blanks
Samurai Palace
The Speakeasy
The Riverboat (cash)
The Riverboat (tourney, web mold)
Mardi Gras v2
Egyptians (Chipco ceramic)
Vineyard Casino (Chipco ceramic)
Formal plaques (ceramic)
and more.

That's quite a resume. Less than a handful of others who have done anything even remotely similar.

Sounds like crossed wires here... please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe kk405's sarcasm about "deep respect" was referring to TenPercenter, not Michael S Patton.

That's what I was getting from it. Much respect for MSPatton.

Canadians do get me ... :p

But I do enjoy getting those long lists from @BGinGA during the crossed wire times...always educational. Just waiting to see when he decides to post the list of his grail sets...anyone knows how to get him t do the improbable? :D

and if it weren't obvious...dibs

I have again spoken with GOCC and they have again assured me that they *are* able to produce these chips. I still have not heard back from Michael, but will continue to monitor my email for any correspondence from him this week.

At this stage, here is the decision I’ve come to: I will be moving forward with creating an official group buy thread to obtain all of your requested orders (see below for my rationale). I will keep the thread open to gauge interest until noon this Friday, November 17th. Once payment is collected from everyone, I will be sending an order to GOCC for a maximum of 5,000 chips.

If we exceed the demand for 5,000 chips, I will include the details on how to continue the group buy with another order in case someone else would like to pursue another one at a later date. At this time, I’m not going to be designing any additional octagons or plaques, simply because I’d rather not delay the process for the larger group.

Rationale for my decision:
  1. I’m not doing this to make a profit. I love these chips and am doing this so I can fill out an existing set of actual Chipco Egyptians with smaller, cash denominations, as well as build a set for my brother as a Christmas gift.
  2. So as not to challenge Michael’s own business, I won’t be sending any orders for Dealer buttons to GOCC, because you can still purchase Egyptians Dealer buttons from holdempokerchips.com. In fact, I purchased one a couple of weeks ago when I came across the Chipco Egyptians that I bought on Craigslist and am very pleased with it. I'd encourage you to do the same. He also has some really cool card protectors in the theme of the Egyptians. You can see the one I have here which is available on his site here.
  3. While I do think our highest priority within this community is treating other chippers with utmost respect, who am I to challenge what GOCC has told me they can or cannot produce? The burden is ultimately on them to ensure they’re within their rights to make chips. They’ve assured me they can, which is good enough for me at this point. Perhaps some of you will disagree with me on this point, but you’re within your rights to not participate in this group buy if you don’t wish to.
Please continue to use only this thread for questions, comments, concerns, etc. Once I post the official group buy thread I will ask that it be used ***only for submitting your requests for GOCC Egyptians***

Thanks for your patience while I sorted this out for myself.

However many people it takes to get there, sure. Judging by what I've seen on this interest thread I expect roughly 5-6 people to fill the order, yes.

Maybe a general public license for PCF should be discussed for future GBs?
