I was wondering how often you see a 3 dollar chip in use in a casino, or in a home game ?

3/6 limit.

Never seen them in a 3/6 game... where was this?
I've only seen 1s (and some $5s) at 3/6. With $3 chips the blinds are 1 chip/2 chips and the pots would seem to be physically very small which would seem to curbs the action. With $1s, lots of chips in the middle means lots of action

Judging by how difficult it is to get them for my seating project, not very often! Same with the $4 chip.

I think they're like $2 bills - they exist but aren't used much.

Not that it's any kind of definitive answer, but I played 3/6 limit poker a LOT when I was younger -- and every 3/6 limit game I ever played used $1 and $5 chips.

I have seen $3 chips used in a 6/12 limit game, however. Surprisingly, it plays much looser than a similar-stakes 5/10 limit game. Lots of chips on the table.

I believe the now-closed Vineyard casino ran 3/6 limit with $3 chips. They had 12,000 of the $3 chips for some reason....

I have over 1600 each mint Aces $2s and $3s -- they're just beautiful light blue and orange chips. IMO, they're great for 2/4 and 3/6 limit games, respectively.

Using all $1s just slows the game down...
+1 this ^^^^

The Aces $3s are waaayyy too beautiful not to use. I go a bit overboard and get all the denominations in from time to time. But the damn things are just too pertty :)

I have only seen them when you bring them out at our home games.

The poker room at the Mirage sold me one for the asking right at the desk. Same with Aria at the table.

And call me crazy but I swear I had some $3 chips in hand at the $1/$3 table(s) at Aria. I know for a fact I got some $2 in change from the dealer (without requesting it) at Caesar's at a $1/$2 table.

They use them in the $9/18 Mixed games at both the Aria and at the Wynn/Encore, so it's possible someone brought one over into the $1/3 NL game, but they're not a standard chip in those games. The dealer probably should change them out in that game, because it's not a chip that other players in the game might even recognize.

I think $3 chips are great for a home-game $3/6 limit game, although you have to have some lower denomination chips in play for the blinds (or antes in stud games). I think in poker rooms part of the reason they stick to $1s in $3/6 and $4/8 is for the rake, but someone more knowledgeable than me could probably give a better explanation. In any event, in a home game you don't have to worry about that.

$9/$18 Mixed Games at the Wynn/Encore FTW!

Yup, this is the $3 I was going to mention. Got mine at $1/$3 NLHE, though it was years ago, so maybe they've since realized how silly and impractical it is to use a $3 chip for that game.

Probably a little for the rake, probably a little because using the smaller chips for bets = more chips in the pot = more action. Besides, if you need the $1 for some purpose like rake and tips, it doesn't make much sense to have a $1 and then a slightly larger denom like a $3. Just use $1s and $25s for consolidation.

Edit: It makes sense to use $1s and $3s for a larger limit game like $9/$18, since the stacks of $1s would quickly get ridiculous. But not $1s and $3s for $3/$6, or $1s and $2s for low even-numbered limits.

I would only think in a 6/12 or 9/18 game?
$2 chips in 4/8, 6/12 or 8/16

Tallulah!
Hahaha!
Tallulah! Sounds like a 2 dollar hooker!

I don't think there are 3-dollar chips anywhere in Minnesota, but we don't have 9/18 either. We have 8/16 and 6/12 which use twos. Smaller games (2/4, 3/6, 4/8) use singles, 10/20 and 20/40 use fives.

venitian used to have a 9/18 game with $3 chips and so did bellagio. Both were almost as juicy as the Wynn 15/30 game. This was 2006

Wait....there is a $2 bill ?

Indeed. Most people erroneously think they’re out of print or uncirculated. False! They are just less circulated. You can walk into any bank in the US and ask for $2 bills. Occasionally, you get a stack of really fresh paper. Great tipping bills. Also I like making $2 bets about silly stuff (golf games, etc.) and paying out with those.

Correction, the behavior game was 8/16 played with $2 chips.
I have occasionally played $8/16 Omaha at the Venetian with what I recall to be very minty green $2 chips. I just searched for the chip on Google Images and the pics that come up look more like an avocado green. I thought they were much brighter, but my memory may just be messed up.
