How fast do HSI chips get beat up looking? (2 Viewers)

Beauty and perfection are two very different things....

I mean the fact that he said the chips have different ammounts of paint on them makes me think that maybe this was just a drunk memeber having a good Labor Day laugh to be honest. The whole post is just so absurd all things considered. Like the guy comes to the community of people who spend thousands on sets and singles and then argues with them about the condition of the chips?!?!? Who’s going to know better people who’ve been doing this since I was born or the new person? The guy prolly couldn’t tell the difference between a leaded and unleaded chip if you put it on a scale.

There’s no doubt THC is better than RHC. I own both and can see the benefits of both. Personally though I think RHC is better because of price so now it’s time for the real debate
I don’t have a lot of patience for people who obsess over condition, because I think that chips are meant to be played with.
But if this guy is learning his limitations and learning that he personally can’t live with the way modern RHCs degrade with play, more power to him.

I don’t think chip mold affects color transfer. It’s possible that the older leaded forulas we’re less prone to it and since fewer RHC sets exist from the time of those formulas it isn’t easy to confirm. I’m sure that newer THCs would transfer just as easy, but the NAGB purchase didn’t mix bright white and large dark spots like you see on the HSIs.

Almost correct.

They are called lots of things. Inserts, spots, edge spots, side paint, just to name a few.
Didn't have anything better to do... so I spent some time on the web looking at the history of poker chip making... looked to GPI direct terminology, even tried to find an order form (with no success) but everything I find online refers to them as "edge spots" absolutely we have many names that we call them as slang and I agree Mr. Dave.

But what I don't find any evidence of is any company calling it "side paint" curious as @CrazyEddie says that is the "technical term" exactly where is this documented?

I am 100% claiming to be ignorant on the subject and would love to be "enlightened" as the term seems absolutely ridiculous to me, there is no "paint" so why would one call it that?

“Side paint” actually came from a poker broadcast. I don’t remember if it was WSOP or some high stakes game or what. And I’m not sure who it was but the commentator guy referred to the edge spots as side paint. And of course, we all loved it.

It was Ali Nejad on a WSOP stream IIRC

Ahh now I see this has been a long running joke! Idiot of the day award goes to "myself" for researching something that doesn't exist! Haha

Guess I'm a bit slow... lol! Carry on!
Yeah the paint thing is a running joke which makes me think it's a troll post. But it was originally from a WSOP broadcast where a commentator called it "side paint". Side story here about "side paint" though because it's relevant, but not relevant and more just funny. But in my college game I used HSI's for a while until they got stolen at which point I replaced them with Taj card mold chips which are nice, but I find them slippy and kinda annoying to use sometimes. So to rectify that I got a set of IG primaries to use instead, but in a surprise to literally everyone on the forum they fucking told me they "think the IG chips are ugly" and the Taj chips are "pretty" because of the colors. So naturally I'm like what the fuck no way you can actually believe this like what? So we discuss and it comes to light that a player dislike the "paint" colors. Oh that and the fact that the chips are to mint for them because they shuffle weird, but they don't believe its because they're mint which is questionable logic. Bear in mind these are the same people who told em the HR Holly (RHC oversized inlay) are the best chips, the IG chips are ceramic, and the cards mold chips are clay. I couldn't believe it, but the players were both dealers so everyone values their opinions like gold even though they both have 0 clue about poker chips just dealing it. To be fair the main person who said they sucked was one of the girls who plays and the other guy is/was/forever will be into her so she just plays him like a fiddle to get what she wants.

Sorry about the thread derail, but the side paint thing reminded me of this story and how my players hated my chips because of the "paint" :ROFLMAO:

IGs are awesome chips! I am not all "team Bear Claw or nothing" like some were when they first hit the scene. But for a budget conscience chipper they are great and so are the HSIs, especially the beautiful secondaries. Don't get me started on slipperiness of the CM chips. I get questioned every time I bring it up,in time folks will realize as the "new wears off" (that tiny bit of texture, that give them a nice grip... at first) remeber that most people have no clue about quality chips. Often if you give people 14 gram slugged plastic they will choose those over casino grade clay because they love the "heavy weight!"

Buy what you love and want to invest in... if they want to play the chips that slip and slide all over the place... in time they will realize it as well and hopefully grow an appreciation for your higher grade sets!

Also technically "edge spots" are printed on the Cards Molds... not really "paint" but not far off either! Lmao

Yeah I tend to just get the chips I like and then let them use what they want. More than anything I was miffed about a “host” telling me to bring beer to use them when I provide them with basically everything but a deck of cards. But today the Lake Elsinore chips hit the market so I think the problem of what to do with the IG chips has been solved

Well for the record I wouldn't call those PCA's "mint" either. They look like they are in fantastic "slightly broke in" condition. When those corners wear ever so slightly that's when the magic happens for us Shufflers. I honestly belive the majority of the "dead mint only" squad are not really shufflers because MI chips absolutely SUCK for Shuffling.

@FordPickup92 my amazing better half has owned her PCAs about 3 years now, I would say we average 2 - 3 games a year on those and ok 9 - 10 games is not a great comparison but yes Leaded THCs are absolutely going to hold up to the test of time much better than today's clay chips. Yet another example of the old phrase "they don't make em like they used to!" Rings loud and proud yet again.

Again IMO it is all about a healthy rotation of chips. I have about $9k invested in this set of RHC/IHC chips

I am aware that it doesn't take long to "knock the new off" meaning destroy the minty value and at that point the chips are used... but I didn't buy the set to look pretty on a shelf. Washed and oiled brand spanking new... two days later they were in the felt at a meet up with other chippers to enjoy

I would say these are "special occasion only" chips. But if someone request them for a game I would never say no. But I'm not overly worried about the investment, I want to play nice chips and willing to take that decrease in value.

There are those here that would argue with me on cleaning and oiling your chips but I do whole heartedly believe that conditioning chips keeps them in better shape and helps them hold up over time. There are plenty of threads here you can reaserch about oiling chips. All of that color transfer will come off with a quick wash in Dish soap, warm water and a magic eraser.

Again invest and protect hoe you see fit. If you plan on these being your "go to" every Friday night chip set then you may want to consider something that will hold up a bit better, if you are looking for that bright WOW factor of those HSI sec $5s for the occasional game then I think they will work out perfect!
thanks I appreciate the detailed response. To clarify, nothing about mint was said about those PCAs...I just said they look better after two years than these RHC do after two games

I'm not too worried about future value, but these things have multiple flea bites, after two games? They will be dust in a year at that rate...
