How big is the difference between CC and something like Paulsons? (1 Viewer)

Huge difference. This year I went from CC to CPC to mint Paulsons. Each one was a step up from the other for me. You can definitely tell the difference in quality, weight, sound, feel and handling.
I don't think there's a difference in quality between CPCs and Paulsons (or TRKs). Weight, sound, feel and handling are in large part subjective.

They way I see it, the higher end chips are like a boat. They are great to play with at someone else's expense.
From a playing aspect, as long as they stack reasonably well and I get paid for the ones I have at the end of the session, the rest is all fluff to me.

The difference is I can afford CC.
If you can afford China clays, you can save a bit more and get some nice ceramics.

If you can afford nice ceramics, you can save a bit more and get some Elites.

If you can afford Elites, you can save a bit more and get some casino-used Paulsons.

If you can afford casino-used Paulsons, you can save a bit more and get some Noirs or WTHC’s.

If you can afford Noirs or WTHC’s, you can save a bit more and get some BTP’s or SB’s.

So, if you don’t think you can afford Paulsons, think again.

Objectively, the weight, sound, surface texture, quality control, and how they shuffle (due to weight and texture).

Subjectively, there is a significant difference between the two; it’s just whether you think it’s worth the extra $$$.

You’re on a chipping website so obviously people here will have stronger opinions about it than anyone else.

I want to cuss at you so much right now. Come to a game so I can yell at you.

Let’s put it in terms most men can understand:

China Clay

End of discussion.

Yeah now go out and buy some Karlie Kloss equivalent chips

Sooooo want to get Paulsons.

Problem is the easiest ones to get are the Elite and Monacos and TBH they don't have the premium look of the classic Paulsons.

They kinda look like (don't hate me) Chinese made insert chips.....

I would think that the most important distinction for someone on a budget would be the true cost of ownership for any of the sets they're considering. If you buy China Clays, they will work well for occasional games for the first couple years, but eventually they are likely to flake apart over time and eventually become almost worthless. If you buy ceramics, they'll still maintain most of their resale value if you later need to resell them, but they'll lose a little bit of their value as the faces wear down from being put in play. If you buy used THC Paulsons, you'll usually get all of your money back or more if you go to resell them in the future even after putting them in play with a high frequency. They might cost more up front, but they are the far wiser economic decision in the long run.

I hate to be the dissenting opinion here, but I've had china clays for a long time, and I've never had flaking or chipping issues. Mine have honestly held up better than a lot of my more expensive chips. I think CC's are just like any other chip. You abuse them, don't take care of them and they won't hold up. If you treat them and maintain them and they're fine. My sets have seen regular use, hell my Dunes that I just sold were used weekly for several years then bi-monthly for another 4 or 5 years and they looked great when I sold them. No worse for wear.

I think if your budget allows you to go straight to THC then thats great go for it, but if you just want to see what a better chip than dice chips are to dip your toes in the water I think CC's are a great option. Especially the Royals chips. They're hands down the best quality CC's I've ever held.

*disclaimer* Please do not take this as my attempt to say Paulsons are the same as CC's because I'm not. I'm simply saying that CC's aren't the flaky fall apart mess they seem to get a rap for on this forum.

Just get shuffle stacks of everything you like and decide for yourself. You can always sell those later also.
My biggest problem with CC’s is how slippery they are. And they’re usually a little dull in color. I don’t really mind the feel or weight that much even though they’re kinda the worst in all those categories too. But you might not mind.
Some guys at my game are unimpressed with my paulson chips and don’t have a clue how much they cost but love these Harley Davidson CC’s they bought. It all depends on the person.

Harley Davidson CC's? Whats this wizardry?

Not China clays, just plastics.

I wanted to like CCs and bought 2 sets this past year (Dunes and Majestics) and sold them for a loss soon after. The biggest issue for me is that China Clays are slippery. Seems like the darker colors are worse for some reason. The slipperiness was enough for me to no longer own any of them. The feel is decent but not the same as a “real” clay chip. For me, BCC are my favorite because they are generally more affordable than Paulson, TRK, and CPC. Also, if you ever resell, CC always sell for less as “real” clay generally hold their value or even increase a bit over time. CC often smell nasty too while I would buy a bottle of cologne if it were scented with fresh BCC or Paulson smell. As they say, get samples and whatever you like, you like. Good luck!

Some of them can be slippery. The ones you mentioned in particular I had issues with as well. The Dunes not as bad but the Majestics were very slippery to me. The Royals don't have near the issue. Some due to better surface texture, some due to the larger 43mm chip. I do agree that CC's are for sure more slick than new THC.

I honestly don’t find Milano’s any more slippery than some ceramics. They have every other problem, just not that one.

I have several different batches of Milanos, and one or two of the batches have not stood up very well. They have sat in racks in a 1000 chip carrier in a dark space and they have still badly faded to the point that some of the pink 5k chips look completely white. @T_Chan has had a similar experience with CC Pharaohs in that they started to disintegrate without any play. That doesn't happen with Paulson's (or at least any I have seen).

The only problem I have with buying Paulson chips with the expectation that they will hold value that you can recoup is that I rarely sell any of my Paulson and have no plans of ever selling the sets I play with (up to 3 full tournament sets and 1.5 cash sets). It's a problem.
