I'm hosting my first game and i can't figure out how many chips i'm going to need to have enough to go around.
The amounts i'll list are not US dollars so just don't pay much attention to that.

8 players
5,000 buy in (1 rebuy)
SB 50
BB 100

how many of each denomination would i need?

thanks!

5,000 buy in (1 rebuy)
Sorry for derailing on the very first response, but in a cashgame you don't usually limit the rebuys. If someone gets felted twice in 20 minutes, are they not welcome to play anymore? So just to make sure, you mean cash game and not tournament, correct?

If cash, I'd remove the "1 rebuy" restriction and either double the buy-in or lower the blinds, because having only 50 big blinds each doesn't allow for much play, but that's of course up to you. :-)

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate the advise it's my first time hosting so I'm not sure about much of it. Noted about the rebuy!
So should I start the blinds at 25/50?
I'm just afraid I won't have enough chips for unlimited rebuys, so I'm not sure how should I distribute the chips :/

Maybe he wants to go to bed early. 5000 buy in is still a sweet game. Regardless rebuy or not.

Just kidding. It's obviously tournament. And answe to question is that in early stage you need as many chips with low denomination as you can spare. Later you chip up. Maybe let us know what denominations you have!

I disagree with this. I think you want tournament starting stacks around 30-40 chips, heavier on the small denoms.

I think a good starting stack for a T10k is

10x50
10x100
7x500
2x2500

Stacks are not unweildy, but making change is not needed much.

As for the OP's cash game question, because the blinds are not increasing like in a tournament, you can spread the low end a little deeper. I would agree you don't want a cap on rebuys. I would also recommend starting with *at least* 100xBB (we routinely start with 200).

Your question is difficult to answer, because it depends on the denomination breakdown. Are your chips value 50/100/500? Or are they 50/200/1000? How tight does the game play?

If it were me and my chips were 50/100/500 in a $5000 buyin, I'd probably set starting stacks at

12x$50
12x$100
7x$500

For 8 players, you'd need

96x$50
96x$100
56x$500

I'd make a big chip your rebuy chip, if you have the option. 5x$1,000 (or 1x$5,000) for the rebuy. You *do not* want to add more starting stack to the table for rebuys.

If you lift the "1 rebuy" limit, I would grab at least enough rebuy chips to give each player 2 at a minimum. The last thing you want to do when your buddy is tilting and spewing out money is run out of rebuys chips!

You should listen to this man when it comes to tourney breakdowns/starting stacks. He knows what he is talking about.

Can you please confirm if you are going to host a tournament or a cashgame? The prefix to the thread is "cashgame", but then you write "start the blinds at 25/50" (as if they are going up at some point).

Also, let us know how many chips you have in each denomination (or color).

Thanks.

+1 once we know this we can provide well informed suggestions :)

I'm so confused by this post/request for help.

If you confirm tourney v cash, please also give us a breakdown of which denoms you have (because you are asking how many you need)...

Or post up what you already have and we can give you advice on what you can do with them, or how many you need to add to make it playable.

Not to put words in the OP's mouth but he did say:

50/100 SB/BB may cause confusion.

If you were spreading a $5/$10 game you would not suggest getting $5 and $10 chips, rather you would spread with $5s and $25s

However if you were spreading a 50c/$1 game you may suggest 50c and $1 chips.

The CRC cash denominations are 50/100/500 (coins) and 1000/2000/5000 notes. The only challenge with using 50/100/500/1000/2000 is finding chips with a 2000 denomination. Easier but not as common is the 50 denomination.

Assuming you can find 50/100/500 chips easily, I would spread starting stacks of 10/15/6 with rebuys initially at 0/5/9 and then just 10x 500.

So you'll need 100x $50, 200x $100 & 200x $500 for 8 players and and average of 2 rebuys per player. For more rebuys, if you can find them then $2000 or $2500 chips would be best - there will be 200x $500 chips on the table so plenty to make change.

Hi @Atmosk just to clarify there are 2 styles of poker:

Cash Games
Tournaments

A cash game means that you're playing for chips with corresponding real life values. The players are able to buy in and cash out at any time. People can buy in for a range of different stakes ($10, $20, $40) depending on how you structure your cash game. An example cash game would be $1/$2 where the blinds are 1 real dollar and 2 real dollars.

A tournament, which you appear interested in hosting, is generally where you buy in with a specific buy in and play until one person has all the chips on the table. The blinds will increase on a set timer (like 30 minutes) and players cannot cash out at any time. Rebuys are typically allowed for the first few levels -- blinds increase each level.

I recommend google searching "how to host a poker tournament". Good luck.

I don't think OP knew the difference between cash game and tournaments. I think the slip up was in thinking "cash game" meant playing for real money.

There is a 3rd kind.....In Poland cash games are forbidden even in casinos, but with a little invention....................
Its a funny case ...because of letter we could not play cash game, but we had friendly tournament director in one of Warsaw casinos.
He created tournament with constant blinds, unlimited rebuys and time limit. Anyway you still had to pay tax.

Well I learned something today :)

It is a shame that Homepokertourney.com is no longer around. It was such a great wealth of information on learning how to host a home tournament. Somebody should buy the domain and get an updated page running. Before the page went dark it needed updating but was still a great resource. That is how I found this forum:)

That was my first foray into poker forums. It was a great site. I made some lifetime friends that I still hang out with today

I'm curious as to why you suggest denoms of 50/100/500/2500. That would be a pretty unconventional chip set wouldn't it? But if you did host a tournament with that set wouldn't you need far fewer T50s than your starting stack suggestion?

Eg.

SB/BB
50/100
50/150 (optional)
100/200
150/300
200/400
300/600

T100s would be your work horse while the T50s wouldn't see much use at all and would be gone altogether after 3 or 4 levels.

I'm curious as to why you suggest denoms of 50/100/500/2500.

OP said blinds start at 50/100, but never gave a denom breakdown, leaving me to guess what denoms he was using. 50/250/1000/5000 would be more efficient, but certainly less conventional.

And in a tournament, the lowest denom is usually gone in the first 4 blind levels, unless you use antes.

I just thought it was a bit of an anomaly to have a 2x increase from the base chip to the next and wondered if there was some reason behind it.

Most of the T25 structures I see posted, like those from BG, have the lowest chip in play for 5 or 6 levels and it's usually required for all but one level.

Eg.
SB/BB
25/50
25/75
50/100
75/150
100/200
150/300

In that structure the smallest chip is required for the SB in 5 of 6 levels and for the BB in 3 of 6 levels.

On the other hand a base T50 would only be needed for the SB in 3 of 6 levels and for the BB in 1 of 6 levels (ie L2 which is a level a lot of people skip). If the set included T100s I'd have thought only a couple of T50s were needed in the starting stacks with T100s making up the bulk.

I hosted a 10 k tournament last weekend. The blinds started at 100/200. Everyone started with the following breakdown: Easy way to go
20x100
10x500
3x1000
when anyone wanted to re buy it was easy to bring in bigger denomination chips and quickly make change with numerous 100 T chips in play.

That seems like a very short stack for a tournament.

50bb turbos need love, too.
Fair point! We do sometimes play a 50BB turbo or two at the end of the night if the main tournament finishes early or people just want to keep drinking, I mean playing, into the night. I retract my comment!
