So looking for an explanation on max bet or pot bet in pot limit. In a game last night of $1/$2 OPL the SB has a $1 in pot big blind has $2 in the pot and the first bet by UTG is $7. Now i dont usually play pot limit, but i would assume the UTG can fold, call the the BB of $2, or raise max $3 for that is what is in the pot. But he called pot and put up $7, everyone said it was a legit bet and I accepted it. So how is the $7 a legit bet?

I'm guessing the logic was double the big blind (4), with big blind (2) and small blind (1)...

The pot sized raise includes the call from UTG that hasn’t happened yet. So the max raise is $5 (blinds plus $2 from UTG) on top of that $2 blind to $7.

Some places also will round up the SB to BB for purposes of calculating pot limit and let you open for $8 but that varies

@Anthony Martino whats the max open in that 2/5/10 you play?

When calculating a pot sized bet, always add what a call would be. 1+2+2=5, so he could raise 5 on top of 2 for total of 7.

One way of remembering how to add this is think of, "I see your $2 and raise to $7," however, don't actually use that terminology as it may be string bet.

Also, a shortcut to calculate pot raise is 3x last bet plus all the other money already bet. Works on every street. Last bet was $2 so 3x$2 + $1 small blind= $7

The only exception is when there is a straddle. If the person that straddles wants to raise pot, they don’t count their straddle as money in the pot already, even though everyone else counts it as being in when they raise. At least that is how it is done at the Jack casino here.

If you're first to act in my 2/5/10 game you can raise to $40 as a pot size bet.

So it's 3x the $10 rock which is $30 plus the BB of $5 and the SB rounded up to $5 added into that $30

3x $10 = $30 + $5 +$5 = $40

That'll help the next time I play a 2/5/10 game...

*Looks at my calendar*

Yup. 13 more years....

But it sounds like Pot Limit isnt really meaning the max bet is limited to the pot amount. The raise is limited to pot.
So UTG can max bet $ 7 = UTG call $2 + raise (Sb+BB+UTGcall)
therefore UTG+1 max would be = the call is $7+ raise(SB+BB+UTG bet+UTG+1 call) = $24 ?
this would be what frogilla's mentioned equation 3x last bet plus previous bets

When repotting in this instance, it would be 3x7 plus the $7 in dead money for $28

You can also calculate 4x the last bet. If another player had called $7, it would be 5x the last bet, and so on

Both bets and raises are limited to the amount in the pot at the time of the action.

If the pot contains $30, then the max bet for first to act is $30 (the pot size). If he does so, then the pot contains $60 and it is $30 to call for the next player.

If that next player wishes to raise, he may *raise* any additional amount between $30 (the minimum raise amount) and $90 (the current pot size before his raise; 30 pot plus 30 bet + 30 call). A pot-sized raise would make the next player facing $120 to call (with $180 in the pot), with the initial bettor facing just the $90 raise to call (if called or folded back around to him, and not reraised). And assuming everybody else folded to the raiser, the original $30 bettor could fold, call the $90 raise, or re-raise anywhere from $90 (the minimum raise amount) to $270 more (90 pot plus 90 raise + 90 call), or up to $360 total.

Depending on how deep the players are, it doesn't take very many pot-sized raises to get entire stacks in the middle.

Pretty sure it’s only $24. 4x works in a couple situations but not this one. 3x plus tail
