I'm overthinking this I'm sure, but would appreciate some input.

Hosting a small, 6 player game tonight. All casual players. Enjoyment being the main objective tonight.

Have more than enough chips to cover any starting stack (T10k, T15k, T20k). The question is, if the goal is to have a run-time of approx. 4.5-5 hours incl. breaks, what starting stack size makes sense here? I'll allow re-buys if people want.

Was thinking of going with T15k, just to give people a bit more to play with, but unsure how larger stacks will affect run-time here with a smaller group. Do bigger or smaller starting stacks make sense? I would like to avoid the game running too long above all, but too short is also not desirable.

I've used @BGinGA 's breakdowns in the past for larger groups, but really unsure how playing with only 6 changes things here.

L1 25 50
L2 25 75
L3 50 100
L4 75 150
L5 100 200
L6 150 300
remove T25 chips (requires 3x T1000 chips)
L7 200 400
L8 300 600
L9 400 800
L10 600 1200
L11 800 1600
L12 1100 2200
L13 1500 3000
remove T100/T500 chips (requires 12x T1000 chips and 5x T5000 chips)
L14 2000 4000
L15 3000 6000
L16 4000 8000 ** EOT
L17 6000 12000
L18 8000 16000

Thanks for the input! :)

Using that same structure, the game would wrap up around level 13 or 14, depending on how many rebuys occur. I'd just run that structure with 20 minute levels and 15 minute breaks.

Agree with Zombie -- the above structure will finish within your desired time frame with 6 players, using 20-minute levels combined with starting stack sizes ranging from 10K up to 20K:
  • If allowing unlimited re-buys, use 10k stacks.
  • If limiting re-buys to one/player, use 15k stacks.
  • If no re-buys are allowed, use 20k stacks.

Yeah assuming 20 minute levels you are looking at 13-14 levels. So in the given structure that's a BB of 4000. 4k*20 is 80k. So 10k starting stacks plus two rebuys. If you did 18 min levels (which should be fine for 6 handed), you are looking at 15 levels, BB 6k*20= 120k. So that is plenty of rebuys at 10k or 8 entries at 15k.

Lots of ways to slice this.

Ended up going with T15k starting stacks with 18 min levels. Only 1 re-buy on the night and tournament ended at the very beginning of Level 15. Ran just over 4h40min including breaks. Everyone got good value out of their buy-ins and went home happy. Thanks for the input everyone!
