Hi there,

New to the forums. Living in NWI. Looking to learn more about poker chips (duh) as well as procuring a new set. Have/had a set of China clay Pharaoh’s before. Currently deciding between either the Majestic Star Casino Paulson from Apache (although I read some bad things about them already), Tiki Kings, or picking up something more entry level from the classified section or one of the venders here. Looking forward to meeting you all

Cheers,
Alex

Hello and welcome to the community! NE Indiana here. There are tons of options for sets. The best thing to do is get lots of samples of everything. Then you will see what you like and don't like.

Thank you guys for the warm welcome. The advice about getting samples are appreciated.

I have and handled some different chips before. Had some samples from CPC, Paulson starburst, as well as a full set of China clay. Recently also bought a sample set of chiplab, but their "clay" I would put in the same category as the China clay to my layman's eyes so not worth the money unless you are going for a custom design. I really enjoy chips with edge spots, otherwise I saw a set of CPC hot stamp that is also within my price range (think the guy posted in the classifieds as well if I'm not mistaken). I wouldn't mind putting in the work to clean up used casino chips (talking about Majestic Star Casino Paulson here), but I read that those are worn down quite a bit thickness wise and can create uneven stacks, which to me is more of a functional issue and that is pretty much the only reason holding me back here :confused

You definitely want to get samples of the Majestic Star chips before committing to them. The $1 chips are fleebitten, but playable. It goes downhill until you get $100 and $500, in my experience. With the variety of labels and label types, they become less attractive as an option.

However, Apache does have some other casino options worth sampling. Jumers, Indiana Grand, etc.

The labels don’t really bother me. Like I said, only uneven stack size which I consider a functional issue that’s bugging me.

The other Paulsons Apache offers are certainly nicer, but a bit more than I would like to spend at this point. Like I’m looking at ceramics which are still under a dollar per chip

Gotcha, also, there is an upcoming group buy from @TheChipRoom for Black Friday.
