Huzzah!

We have a very good and close friend who has an education/background in graphic design.
He is in the printing industry, but in the what I call "the lord high mucky muck" levels of the company. (we both worked with/for him at some point for our15+ years in this company)
He does graphic design on the side, (company branding) to keep his creative juices flowing, and has been looking for smaller jobs of late.

We pointed a few PCF'ers his way and they didn't scare him away! He enjoys the challenge chip labels present.
He is not on PCF, and is not a chipper, but he has decades of printing experience, a lot of it working with Gear.
He has the added benefit of having unfettered access to Gear, and being able to talk shop about files, size, fonts, colours, printers, inks, RIPs etc.

Currently, while this is still a side gig, he is only doing design work for labels we print.
Gear is still doing all the tribute/replica label work himself, our friend is more interested in the custom design aspect of this work.
If he makes a change to do this full time, he will hang out a shingle in here at that time.

He is charging $65.00 USD per hour, with a $100.00 minimum. (deposit)
You don't get special queue access by using him. (there are a few customers waiting now)
What you DO get, is that you don't have to pay a set up fee for your custom work if done through him.

Once the first jobs get printed and posted, I will start a thread of just his work to look through.

If you have questions, or want to seek out his services, email: ask@gearlabels.com and I will reply.

I’m definitely interested but don’t even know where to begin
That's the hard part for sure!

I think starting with the chips is a good place to begin.
I have seen more than one job get dropped while waiting in the queue for labels.
A common thread? Not being 100% on what chips they want to put the labels on.

Find a set you love the look, feel, and sound of. <ie GET SAMPLES>
Know in your head if you want a cash set or a tournament set or a set that can handle both.
Know what kind of games you like to play.
Micro stakes cash? Super Deep stack tournament?

Pick a style.
Go find the threads with the brackets for choosing the HOF calendars each year.
Take note of no more 3 sets that you really like, a theme of style will emerge. (make your own bracket to help you choose!)
  • Old School 50's / 60's bespoke artwork or modern casino minimalism?
  • Casino or Cardroom or Club?
  • Photo Realism or Artistic Design?
  • Every chip the same, or unique images on each chip or even each side?
Pick a theme. (this one is my bugaboo)
You have favorite ways or places to spend your time, do you want any of those things on your poker chips?

A good designer will be able to wheedle it out of you and give you some choices.

One item to note:
This will take some time. The best things often come from the things that do.

Perfect timing!! I have a new set idea!!

Is there a way to get an estimate if given a description of what I'm looking for?
Not really, as it depends on your specificity and ability to make decisions.

What you can do is set a budget.
The more detail you give and the clearer your vision, the less time it will take.
Show/Tell me what you want, and say you don't want to go over X amount. (send an email to ask@gearlabels.com)

I can pass that along and he will probably be able to tell if he can or can't do what you are asking for in the time/amount budgeted.

Fair enough, I'm looking to get either some artwork recreated or a tribute piece. Have a message to the owner of the art work if he is okay with a recreation or if it needs to be a tribute. We had messaged previously but looking back his reply left me unclear what was okay or not. Obviously I have no intentions of treading on their IP. Is that enough to get even a ballpark rom on either of those 2 options?

Should be. If not I will do some wheedling of details for free. :)
Send an email to start the ball rolling.

Legal question, who owns the artwork in this case, the IP owner wants to know.
If the artwork is 100% unchanged, then the IP owns it and we won't print it without their express permission.
(We do this for people who own CPS, Key West, BTP, and Apache's artwork etc)

IP can email me directly with any/all questions.

And if it's not?
This isn't a yes or no answer, and tends to have strong opinions on either side.
In order not to derail this thread, I reiterate, email me with any/all questions.

It's complex and it's situational.
What is shrug worthy to one IP owner, is reign down hellfire for another.
We do our best to stay on the right side of as many people's lines in the sand as possible.
Our business and reputation depend on it.

So send us an email at ask@gearlabels.com.
Tell us what you want and what your IP's line in the sand is, and if we are comfortable doing it we will, and abide by the terms agreed upon.

I have either been waiting or working with @Gear all year. There was a long waitlist and when I got to the front of the que, I had some design changes. @aaron2786 and I had a killer design, and I just needed a few touch ups. @Wifey put me in touch with their designer and we nailed down what colors can match perfectly and what alternative options I could go with, and of course, by then I had acquired an ESPT set and we put together a quick label design. Their designer was very helpful. Super pumped my custom sets are about to be complete! Let's just hope I don't overheat the printers!!! Thanks @Wifey and @Gear. Chippin' wouldn't be close to the same without them. BOOYAH!

Any updates here with examples of the designer friend's work? I'm trying to figure out where to find a designer to use for a custom project.
