Does anyone have experience buying new Rolex watches? (1 Viewer)

It’s just like poker chips. Most people are fine with dice chips. But those who appreciate the artifacts of gaming aspire for more. And within that subgroup, there are those who spend 20x the cost of dice chips and those that spend 200x the cost of dice chips. Even though dice chippers look in horror at all of us, there is a big gap at the top of the Pareto distribution.

I don’t think I’ll ever buy a watch, but I think they’re cool and appreciate the ones other peoples have.

I’d prefer the Yachmaster 40 over the Submariner. Much nicer IMO.

Personally nothing against Rolex
Just do not like look of them except Hulk plus most of my life they were out of my financial reach...
Still if having choice I woul pick Omega or Capeland XXL

Patience is a virtue. There is no hurry. I’d like to own one and would have plopped down the money, but the world will keep spinning if I continue to wear the watches I have. I certainly am not going to solve a made up problem with extra money or by settling for a second choice. I have a handle on how things work now and lol at these folks trying to gin up exclusivity as a motivator to get me to do stupid things.

Smart move. Just keep asking around different stores and hopefully something will turn up.

I don’t know much about buying watches on eBay but I suspect it’s a bad idea. Not because of the risk of getting scammed (though if you don’t know how to spot fakes that is also a factor) but because I would assume sellers are charging a significant premium to reflect the risks of fraudulent chargebacks.

There are watch forums with m2m sales that are a lot safer than e-bay. www.watchuseek and www.timezone are two of the biggest and most well known. Sort of just like buying & selling chips here vs e-bay, but lots more people interested in watches than poker chips

Someone once told be what I think was a semi joke, but I thought it would be appreciated in this thread - A Rolex is for a man who's trying to get laid; an Omega is for a man who knows he's going to. lol

@Jeff enjoyed discussing watches with you at the S@P - let me know how the purchase goes.

P.

Ok. Lol at me thinking I’d be able to waltz into a jewelry store with a wad of money and walk out with a watch. Much less negotiating off list price.

I went into the Jewelry store. He looked me up and down, let me fondle the demo models and took my name. Not much chatty chatty. No watches, no discussion of price. Def no expectations, no promises. I’m a dirty plebe.
And I just went into said store and had them size my new watch…that I didn’t get from them.

What’s really cool about PCF is after posting this thread, I had folks texting me with leads and one friend was even texting pictures from Cruise Ship gift shops while he was on vacation!

Anyhow … brag post…2022 Sub

Awesome, congrats, looks great on your wrist. So what's the story? You score from another AD or go grey?

I love Rolex. Had an Ad that treated me very good. Every time I went on a run at Foxwoods or Vegas I’d drive to Nh and buy a watch with the idea it’s gonna be a lot harder for me to sell this watch then it is to spend all this cash. Mom n pop store closed down and now it’s like pulling teeth just to get a call back from the only Ad left. Haven’t bought a watch since 2019 and I’d say the shortage is what brought me back to chips and other casino gear. No shortage of racks in this for sale section. Great watch wear it in good health!

Couple of mine. 116500ln was my first and I was hooked.

What a collection - love the white dial Milgauss!
Did you ever venture into other brands?
Much appreciated. I’ve tried a little bit of everything in the watch community but I think I can relate most to Rolex. I got deep deep roots with the brand dating back to my childhood so it’s tough for me to make the switch cuz it’s where my heart is. I’ve cheated but never for to long.

Best advice I can give to anyone seeking a high end luxury watch in todays market is build a relationship with the owner/manager of the Ad. Show your face, show you wear your stuff that’s not a safe queen and the occasional case of grey goose around holiday time or tray of coffees works wonders, social bribes. Some people would say Steve why should I have to jump hoops to spend 5-100k bucks on a watch. Simple, because there’s somebody out there that’s already above you on the list and if you wanna get above them you gotta make moves. Owner is the first to touch everything. They hit his/her desk first and what they and only they decide to be offered to the public is the only chance what so ever you have of getting a watch. It’s the cold truth. Rolex makes a million watches a year and sends shipments bi weekly/weekly. What shortage? The shortage is the owner has 5 sons/daughters 5 guys at the country club 5 guys at the Porsche dealer and 5 close friends who send texts daily wanting a SS daytona. All those people get taken care of first because they all have things they can offer in return or are family. That’s your competition. Why every case is empty is because all the watches were pre sold n picked up before noon day after delivery from rolex. My Ad would joke he could run his store from his boat in the middle of winnipesaukee because the watches sold themselves. Why show up to work when everything sells out in 3 hours Monday morning? You gotta press if you want something. Shove all the chips in the middle n hope to go runner runner.

Not being a collector or a rich man, my idea of having a single watch for life, from inside the sea to Presidential or Royal Palaces:
Rolex_IMG_1146.jpg

I bought it in 2004; its price has doubled as new and trippled as used.
Less accurate than a mobile phone, but more sturdy, and doesn't need any charging.
Anyway, a watch is the only stylistically permissible jewel on a man, in my old-school book.

And @Jeff, congrats man! :) :)

So you're recommending buying a counterfeit illegal product. Got it.

How would this forum feel about a member recommending some very good replica Paulsons. They will look and feel the same as authentic ones to those who arent experts, but are 10% of the price. Just curious...
