I have my shuffle stack of paulson mold (crayola crayon feeling chips) and plenty of the old THC chips from PCA era and they feel totally different. Just wondering what new THC chips (like Paris $1s) feel similar to. Would mixing new THC with old THC if similar wear feel out of place.

So im guessing new THC still feel much like the old THC and nothing like the Paulson mold home chips

You’ll definitely feel the weight difference shuffling the 1/5s vs the other denoms. I’m a BCC guy which makes me chill about differences within a set though. I can’t stand too big differences in condition since it makes stacks uneven in height, but other than that it’s pretty much all good. Very much subjective and you’ll get different preferences here. Just have to decide for yourself, I guess.

I would say shuffling non leaded THC feels closer to shuffling home mold chips than what shuffling leaded does.

And don’t forget, the PCA chips are not always THC (like the RHC $1 you have above) and will feel different. Heck, even different colors of the same mold can feel different.

Ah ok cheers, Weight does not bother me, its the mix of waxy chips like the paulson mold mixed with my old THC chips, which feel dryer and harder that would feel out of place. they might as well be different brands. I could draw pictures with my paulson mold shuffle stack

Agree with you there. Will not mix molds within the same set

The biggest difference to me is the inlays. The older leaded THCs mostly had textured inlays and the newer unleaded ones mostly have smooth inlays that feel to me like cheap paper, in comparison. There are also differences in the feel of the clay, the sound of the clay, and the weight. Newer Paulson clay ages differently and also seems more susceptible to color transfer.
So I'll answer in the affirmative - yeah, they feel different. But how different is probably somewhat subjective, so buy some and decide for yourself.

I believe I posted about this long ago in another thread. I did prefer the older leaded chips. How many people here had, or have, a problem with a small amount of lead in Paulson chips? I never did. Perhaps a biological scientist can tell us if lead is absorbed through the fingers. My feeling was that as long as the chips weren't being eaten, then what was the danger? Maybe I was wrong.

Unpopular/uneducated opinion: I think the really heavy leaded THC’s are TOO heavy. I prefer shuffling a lighter chip.

Different molds aren't just about the different shapes stamped into the clay, they also have different finishes on the 'flat' part of the chip. Get a sample set of the CPC molds that are all off white but different molds and this is clear as day. Some are just rougher or smoother and it drastically affects the experience with the chips when it comes to touch, look and sound.

Your typical PCF member has little to no danger from contact with leaded chips unless a) you are milling them or b) you are eating them. If the situation is b) then you have issues that nobody here is likely to be able to help you with. If the situation is a) then you should do so in a well-ventilated space with eye protection and a decent respirator, and shavings/garbage should be cleaned up quickly and thoroughly.

Agree - Walking outside and breathing the air is probable more hazardous than handling leaded poker chips. Unless you’re eating them, and even then, the ~5% or less amount of lead in them is probably the least of your worries considering the chemicals dyes, etc - lol.

So yeah, the lead in leaded chips is pretty low on my list of things to be worried about.

Not sure where you get the 5% number. It’s well documented that a fully leaded 10 gram Paulson chip has something like 4.5 grams of lead. Maybe that works out to 5% by volume, I dunno, I’m no metallurgist.

But I mean, Doyle lived to 88, so I’m not concerned.

Completely and totally pulled it out of my ass. I have absolutely no idea how much lead is actually in a chip. I wasn’t really trying to be factual - lol.

Amended and restated: What I will eat for lunch today is of more concern to me then the lead content of a poker chip that I have absolutely no intention of eating.

I neither agree or disagree with this statement

Sorry this thread derailed a bit but basically for me home paulson mold chips feel like candle wax on the edges, nothing to do with surface mold, and my older casino chips feel like hard clay on the edges. I basically wanted to check that new casino chips still feel like hard clay and not like wax.

We’re you only shuffling a sample set?
If so, the problem could be the dark blue chip. That color is notoriously soft (hello, ‘98 Bellagios!) and can transfer colors like crazy. Once that blue dust transfers to all the chips (like I see in that photo of the 1000), they will all feel soft.

I had a full set of Classics (same mold and mostly the same colors as NPS), and also a sample set that I would shuffle at my desk. The color transfer was awful on the shuffled samples, but the main chip set didn’t suffer from this.

I used to have 700 paulson classics that felt the same as my shuffle stack, I always assumed the non THC home market chips were a different recipe to casino chips. I guess i was just checking if modern chips have swapped to the more waxy feeling recipe or if they still feel like the old chalky recipe

@Josh Kifer probably eats crayons, not chip shavings...

I was thinking about this and decided to pull out some of my old THC‘s and just check. Obviously most of this is very subjective. There is a slight weight difference between what I was able to test. There’s a very slight sound difference. But texture wise it was hard for me to tell (I couldn’t really do it truly blind) The long and short for me is there is a difference, but not enough to make a difference.

The Starbursts are from 1996-97, Spotted Ks from 1998, AST are 2018 I believe.

Cool, cheers, feel is the main thing i was wondering about and sounds like they feel the same. Weight diff im not fussed about anywhere between 9-10 is my preferred weight anyway. My old leaded chip weights vary massively between 10 to nearly 12

For the full experience of lead, try out some Paulsons from the 70s-80s. Starburst, generic roulette, or ex-casino.
