Been thinking about it for a while now and am in a bit of a weird spot. I know @Eloe2000 recently went to only customs and he seems to be loving it. My crew is primarily tournament people and my cash sets sitting.

I guess what I’m debating is dropping my paulsons to go full customs. Plus CPC designing has been a ton of fun for me. Just something about it.

Also as a side note my joy for this hobby has primarily turned to attending meetups and just hanging out with great people.

Love to hear what you guys think as I feel I’m not the only one who has been thinking this recently.

All depends on your goals and interests. Just want to have fun at a tournaments and hang out with great people? Folks might enjoy the customs if you do them well. Plus, you indicated you enjoy the designing them. So I’d go CPC customs. Or perhaps Paulsons, if they’re cheaper. Or mill your current Paulsons and swap out the inlays every so often.

If it’s one or the other it’s no question, get your CPC customs. I’ve had multiple Paulson sets and, while there is only one Paulson, you’re virtually exclusively locked into whatever set/colors you can find. Unless you want to mill and relabel, which some folks have done with really great results (but I don’t like due to the double inlay rings), or you’re someone able to influence or create a NAGBGB to get the colors/inlay you want, then you’re stuck hoping to find THE Paulson set. I’ve found this much easier with tournament sets than cash sets, but ultimately I’ve moved most of my Paulson’s and am about to move my last set. Nothing like creating your own and getting exactly what you want. The Paulson sound and feel are singular, but the same is true for CPCs, and you’re getting what you want.

Ultimately, if I have to choose, it’s CPC customs.

Good luck!

Why not keep both?

After all the time and effort you've put into accumulating Paulson chips, I can't imagine there'd be much worse than feeling regret at having sold them a year or so down the line.

Give it some more time, is what I'd say.
To add to this, I think you'd seriously regret selling your Silver Star (or is it Silver Saddle?) set, for example. I imagine they're an absolute showstopper at meetups.

I don't think it has to be such a cut-throat choice between one or the other, personally.

Pretty much this. I put too much sweat and tears into building my Jack and CDI sets to sell them just a couple of years after I assembled the sets.

My focus on the hobby now is definitely with CPC customs. I have THC and RHC molded Paulsons, three BCC sets on different molds, ceramics, and hybrids.

Each CPC set I make is going to be on a different mold. I have my 44mm dayglow A molds, and my Canoe Clubs on the B mold. I'm making a Canoe Club cash set and I have at least one more theme on the MD-50 mold that I'm working on for cash and tournament sets. One more cash set on the Jockey mold and I'm set for this hobby.

From what I can gather, you're a good 8 years younger than I am, and I'm definitely on the younger end of the spectrum, and if you take the mean age of folks that post here, I'm below it.

I know that patience in this hobby tends to run thin especially if there's cash to cover it, but you're a young guy whose tastes are sure to change with time. Don't sell your Paulsons because you will regret it. 100% guaranteed there. You literally have a lifetime to make CPC sets as long as their doors stay open, of which I'm not too concerned with an order book at least 15 months long and getting larger by the day.

This resonates with me. Pretty much where I’m at.

It's a matter of priorities, if you 're not rich enough to have both.

When faced with this dilemma, I voted for CPC customs, 'cause I can make something meaningful to myself and have the joy of creation through these, and I 'm a more visual type of person (whereas no chips can sound better than old, leaded, THC Paulsons).
So, among serious "American clay" sets, I 'll be having 3 CPC custom sets and just one Paulson overlabelled set.

I voted for CPC, I've never had either but on my journey next steps are either CPC or casino grade plastics.

Like @BNM i don't like the double inlay ring, though if I could find the right trk set I'd live without customs.

I prefer 43s and don't really plan to purchase any 39s. With the exception of CPC scrown, really happy to have the 43 A mold day glow sample. It is hard to pick between 43 and scrown, but scrown is really it for me. I'll pick up more samples over the year and hone in on it, but like @JMC9389 says patience is a virtue with hobby.

i've ditched so many sets over the years, most of which i regret (the amount of casbah clubs i sold for bargain basement prices will haunt me forever). but selling my jack detroits for my CPCs i do not (yet) regret. it's kind of nice knowing i'm mostly "stuck" with these, so i do not have to chase that next set anymore.

good advice too

This is not at all something that you have to live with if murdering Paulson's to re-label. You just have to murder them the "right" way. Sure it is faster to just mill them but then you have the problem you referred to. If murder by knife & hand then you will have none of that

Of the two choices I would stick with CPC. As an alternative I would say just downsize your Paulson sets. When I finally made the decision to get my first custom CPC set it was a big leap of faith for me. I had two Paulson (1000 ct Noir and 300 ct WTHC) sets and a BCC (650 ct Samurai Palace) set. I say that because I was very underwhelmed by the CPC colour samples but the more I saw of other customs the more I wanted to have my own.

Once I received my first order I knew that customs are where it's at for me. But I couldn't sell off all my sets so I kept enough for an STT of my Noirs and sold everything else to fund the rest of my first and second custom CPC sets. I was also finally able to acquire an STT set of BCC Proteges.

Honestly though, it'll be a rare occasion if I play with those or my Noirs but at least they're small sets not taking up a lot of space. I am getting the itch to design one last set so I may sell the last of my Noirs and Proteges to fund that... we'll see.

Until then I am quite happy with these:

Paulsons/CPC’s don’t feel better or worse to me personally, they just feel different. I would be perfectly happy with either one in terms of feel. Edge spots, inlay design, history, and sentimental value speak to me more than just feel alone so I would make my decision based off of that.

I answered Paulson, but if I had to only keep 1 for whatever reason it would be CPC.

One of a kind, mint condition, AND you get to choose your colors/spots AND you get to choose your breakdown without endless searching. No brainer for the card player if you aren’t a collector type.

Those who don't at least start out with customs will likely end up with them later. Doesn't have to be CPC. Some will still use base Paulson chips, others will go ceramics, some stay with budget CC's/CHIMPs, maybe even custom jetons and plaques.

Without knowing what Paulsons you’re working with, I’ll say this:

If your Paulsons are unleaded RHCs, it’s a simple decision - ditch them. CPC offers better molds.

If you have NAGB THCs, I’d still ditch them, If money has any meaning to you. Because those chips are worth far more in cash than they are as chips. But opinions vary - I don’t feel like unleaded THCs are anything special, but a lot of people disagree.
