To all the veterans out there who’ve owned and sold both custom sets (ceramic or cpc or plastics) and casino paulsons/TRKS, which made you feel more complete in your chipping journey? Is a personal custom set the ultimate chip nirvana?

I realize the common answer may be that you’ll never feel complete in this hobby haha, but looking forward to see what everyone has to say.

If there’s a thread discussing this already, sorry and plz send me the link lmao

Oddly... and I never thought I would ever say this... but custom cpc set and I haven’t even received it yet.

But I absolutely still love my casino Paulson sets. Big fan of variety myself, but if I for whatever reason had to exit the hobby then the custom set likely stays. I think.

If this is your response without even receiving them yet, I’m VERY glad I got in on the blind samples LOL

I think (hope) I’m almost there. I have owned and sold:

CDI05 cashset
Sunfly WSOP replica ceramics set
ASM hot stamped cashset
Empress joliet cashset
Royals tournament set
BCC Samurai cash set
Aurora Star HS tournament set
BCC CDI cashset
Matsui tournament set
Abiatti limit set
Paris $1/CDMs mixed start of a cashset
Some 43mm SBs
BCC Protege tournament set

Currently own:

LCO cashset
BCC mardi gras v1 cashset
BCC Protege cashset
TRK mixed leaded cashset
WTHC cashset
BG ceramics tournament set

And I have a CPC cashset on the way that I’m hoping will be the last piece of the puzzle.

Between what I own and what I have tried and sold I don’t know what else there is. Perhaps a BCC Riverboat cashset but that’s probably only slightly more realistic than a Paulson custom set. Of course there are other THC sets out there I wouldn’t mind owning but I don’t feel the need to pursue any of them. A house mold set would be cool, particularily like the MGM Grand but again nothing I feel like chasing now.

If I could only have 1 set I’d go with customs. The added security feature is hard to understate. But I love my PCA set and would not let it go without a fight!
Your custom set is truly one of a kind sir! I struggle with finding a theme as unique as yours and many of the other hall of fame sets.

Wow! Talk about veteran haha, of those did you regret selling one more than all the others?

If I could get one of them back I guess it would be the Aurora Stars. I really liked them, I just felt that I couldn’t justify owning such an expensive tournament set when I hardly ever host tournaments. Plus some of my tourney players are animals when it comes to chip handling. Can’t put minty Paulsons in the hands of those..

Definitely agree on the handling, some sick folks disrespecting all my chips at the home game haha. Surprised the aurora star is your top set that you regret, beautiful set though I also never host tourneys

I'm not a customs guy. My favorite sets are from places where I've played and had memorable times, like the ACF in Paris, and the Grand Casino Mullet Bay in St. Maarten.

I still have Paulson's, but I will say, they don't hit the felt nearly as much. Something about playing with your set, and not a set that someone else has, that dulls the joy of the Paulson's. I'm pretty much customs or nothing here on out.

Wow, it's like talking to a mirror. Captured my feelings exactly.

I have been here for almost two years and owned varieties of casino and customs sets including CCs, ceramics, RHC, THC, CPCs, and TRKs. I feel like I have “graduated” to customs and can employ all of my chipping knowledge to create something that both has meaning as well as good aesthetics by going custom. I feel like my custom CPC cash set is the culmination of my chipping experiences and tastes. Earlier on in my journey I may not have appreciated it as much. But it’s difficult to match the respect and appreciation you have for something after you have built it with care and put so much into it. Similar thoughts to @JeepologyOffroad

I even have a badass semi custom THC set that took me a year to build that I haven’t unveiled yet and I am already thinking about selling that to build another CPC set.

But to each their own. I never had a high degree of appreciation for random casino sets.

Variety is the spice of life. Initially my journey started with China Clays, then I went for the gusto with RHC Paulsons. I then sold those RHC Paulsons for other RHC Paulsons I liked a lot better. Then I dipped my toe into CPC's with @dennis63 ' Key West chips. From there, I went deeper in the rabbit hole with THC Paulsons, BCC's, ceramic hybrids, ceramics, and also more CPC's now.

Personally I see very little reason to have more than one set on the same mold of chips. Because of this and what's available, further stops in my chipping journey from here are going to be pertaining to CPC customs on different molds. The journey is figuring out what you like and navigating the changes in your tastes over the years, and what gives you the most fulfillment out of the hobby, because that's what this is after all, a hobby.

I kind of have just given up any sense of restraint. At this point, I think I'm just going for every possible mold and every combination of set.

... But I do feel that collecting them all has kind of prepared me for the holy grail of chips... Which is a custom CPC set. You learn so much along the way, and then you put all of that knowledge into your own personal theme and artwork.

Similar to those lines, are the custom Paulson sets, which can be actually much harder since they involve not only artwork but also lots and lots of slicing and dicing.

But at the end of the day I know that the one set that I'm keeping is the custom CPC set (which I haven't even received yet)

I haven’t made a CPC set (yet) but this is how I feel. I bought sets/chips just to look at them, and re-sold so many chips as my taste evolved. Designing CPCs off the bat for me would have been wasted and I’d inevitably have ordered and loved later custom sets more. I’ll probably always have a few different manufacturer sets, but I look forward to the CPC design process now.

This is the way.

It's weird, I've seen alot (including me) go thru this exact same journey. In the end, having our own unique chips we made seem to take over and be the real grail.

And I'll say on my end, all my customs will be staying here sans a few of the oddballs. And I'll keep adding until I can't. And when I die, @Saoliver will auction them for the kiddo. And he will keep the (Now 1900 total) Westworlds.

I am probably different than most but I would just assume have a fantasy set as a casino set assuming all else being equal. If both are leaded THC with equally as pleasing inlays it doesn’t matter to me if it came from a casino that I have no connection to or if it’s Paulson fantasy. The fact that the chips came from a casino have no value to me.

One thing to keep in mind. One common theme here is journey that led us to customs and putting together casino, relabel, and mixed sets
Yeah I haven’t been in here nearly as long as y’all but I’ve finally narrowed down my tastes and figured out what speaks to me the most. I think I actually might have PM’d you about it John haha, not sure if you’ve seen it yet.
