Custom vs Casino (1 Viewer)

Yeah I haven’t been in here nearly as long as y’all but I’ve finally narrowed down my tastes and figured out what speaks to me the most. I think I actually might have PM’d you about it John haha, not sure if you’ve seen it yet.
You probably did. I live in chaos so I probably missed it.

I am about 85% of the way to chipping Nirvana, where I can pretty much stop the constant searching and buying and selling and building. Not that it's not a fun process, but it seems I've been doing it almost constantly for the last 3 years and it's a bit fatiguing. It's really a younger person's game, so once I have one, maybe two more projects finished, then that will be it. Of course I hope to continue contributing to the forum and discussions in a meaningful way, just will be stepping away from the more marketplace side of things by the end of the year.

I think that for most people that have been at this for a long time it is kind of a journey where one starts out with dice chips > China Clay > Ceramic > Casino > Nice Fantasy > Custom of some sort.

Nice Fantasy & Casino might be exchanged in the order for some, but you get the idea.

Hard to be a younger persons game when everything is so damn expensive LOL. I’m on the much younger side here. So being 85% of the way are customs what got you there or other sets?

Yeah this seems pretty accurate for me. Do you have a custom set Alan? I know you had a relabel set you were working on if I’m not mistaken

I have & have had multiple casino sets and a TR King fantasy set from a GB that I put together back right before TRK went out of business.

I have always struggled with a meaningful theme for a custom set so have hesitated on pulling the trigger up until now. Currently I am working out the details of a RHC re-label set.

Variety is the spice of life. Initially my journey started with China Clays, then I went for the gusto with RHC Paulsons. I then sold those RHC Paulsons for other RHC Paulsons I liked a lot better. Then I dipped my toe into CPC's with @dennis63 ' Key West chips. From there, I went deeper in the rabbit hole with THC Paulsons, BCC's, ceramic hybrids, ceramics, and also more CPC's now.

Personally I see very little reason to have more than one set on the same mold of chips. Because of this and what's available, further stops in my chipping journey from here are going to be pertaining to CPC customs on different molds. The journey is figuring out what you like and navigating the changes in your tastes over the years, and what gives you the most fulfillment out of the hobby, because that's what this is after all, a hobby.
I'm also in this camp...In the sets I build, I try to reflect on what is/was out there (that I like)

So I mixed ASM/CPC, BCC and Paulson with other options available (leaded, hotstamped/inlay, oversized, solid, molds, casino/fantasy/custom, cash/tourney/limit/HU, cali/nevada colors, ...)

Soooo much to choose from...+10 sets and counting

- BCC MGK custom hotstamped solid cash
- BCC MGK Grand Casino cash
- BCC Protege cash & tourney
- ASM/CPC Key West cash/limit
- ASM semi-custom solid cali cash set (horseshoe mold)
- ASM semi-custom spotted cash set (horseshoe mold)
- Paulson PCA cash (incl. custom hotstamped dimes & custom hot pink quarters + secondary THC $1)
- Paulson Las Palmas HU set
- Paulson Aurora star cash set (incl. oversized 20's & hundos)
- Paulson Aurora star hotstamped tourney set
- Paulson leaded RHC semi-custom solid cali cash set
- Paulson HSI cash set

Most of my focus has been on customs and semi-customs, and that's where the focus will stay for the foreseeable future. I have a few of what I call "curiosity sets" some playable and some not, that represent a nice cross-section of high end materials, manufacturers, and places, as well as some "community participation" items. I have one big fantasy set and a couple medium size ex-casino sets.

Oddly... and I never thought I would ever say this... but custom cpc set and I haven’t even received it yet.

But I absolutely still love my casino Paulson sets. Big fan of variety myself, but if I for whatever reason had to exit the hobby then the custom set likely stays. I think.
My feelings haven’t changed. Still haven’t received it yet

I feel my customs were an accomplishment, I've not felt that way about any other set that I have owned. Pretty sure they are my one hit wonder. I prefer Paulson in almost every way other than customizability. So, you definitely need both.

I’m generally casino over customs…because I generally prefer Paulsons.

Very few people get to implement what is the ultimate dream…custom Paulsons.

Custom over casino… With palm trees! :p
