What should I do?

  • Ditch Paulson sets, get more CPC chips

Without knowing what Paulsons you’re working with,

Been thinking about it for a while now and am in a bit of a weird spot. I know @Eloe2000 recently went to only customs and he seems to be loving it. My crew is primarily tournament people and my cash sets sitting.

I guess what I’m debating is dropping my paulsons to go full customs. Plus CPC designing has been a ton of fun for me. Just something about it.

Also as a side note my joy for this hobby has primarily turned to attending meetups and just hanging out with great people.

Love to hear what you guys think as I feel I’m not the only one who has been thinking this recently.
Where's the do both option?

I love my 44mm CPC tourney set, but I also love my Paulson relabel projects. The current one is admittadly getting a bit expensive, but both are awesome.

However, the real solution to your happiness still eludes you.

TRKs!!

Those are freaking unobtanium. I think somebody would have to be insane to sell those. But they are cash chips, and @Rbonus012 mentioned that 1) he can’t get a cash game going, and 2) he’s getting a huge kick out of designing chips. So it seems to me that he should probably get out of the Paulson game.

We can all share our thoughts, but when it comes down to matters of taste, everybody has to make their own decision. Personally I don’t see the value of customs - they’re just not for me. But I don’t tell people not to get customs (especially since you can make a CPC set that looks and feels better than the majority of Paulsons on this site IMO.) To me, it’s like tattoos. I’ll never get one. But I’m not telling other people not to get them (except my minor children, ha.).
Blah blah blah - it’s a totally personal decision.

One reason why CPC would be better for you: Tournament chips. The problem with Paulson is the nice tournament chips get super expensive. Want a 43mm $1000, $5000? Might cost you $30+ or more per chip. Get them custom made in your color and your art for much less.

Cash is a harder decision because you can get nice Paulsons for less than customs would cost.

The main problem I've always had with CPC/ASM is the weight. When I used to have Paulsons and ASM, my players never liked the ASM. Paulsons (especially some of the older ones) have a nicer feel. Plus there's the cool factor that they came from a casino, opened or not.

One of my players that was vocal about not liking my ASM set asked me if they're hollow or fake clay. Always what you want to hear with a brand new set.

Remember too that the mold changes the feel considerable. I used to think I didn't like CPCs because of the feel...turns out I just don't like the feel of the A-mold...then I got my second-hand diamond-square cash set, and they're amazing. If you rub two chips together they don't feel gritty but buttery smooth. Imo scrowns also feel great. Get some mold samples, it makes such a difference

I think there’s two big categories of Paulsons on the forum here. There’s “rare” “impossible to get” Paulsons and there’s Paulson’s offered in Chiproom sales. While we all appreciate Chiproom sales, those casinos chips aren’t “rare” or “impossible to get” to us anymore. If I really wanted to put effort in I could get another Isle of Capri, Roadhouse, Jack Detroit, etc set. Those are the types of sets I sold in order to fund my CPC projects. I would never sell a one-of-a-kind Paulson set to do that. Or any one-of-a-kind set.

Looking at CPC customs myself right now, I am probably going to hold onto my Paulson's and see how I feel in a few years.

Paulson cash set, CPC tourney set. /thread

Feels like this is the best solution for you Ryan.

When collecting, I think it is always best to go higher in quality than quantity. given where prices are, I believe there is a strong incentive to sell expensive chips that are not essential to a collection right now. And if doing that allows you to fund an extra CPC set…then it’s a no brainer.

Now wrt to selling a grail set and regretting it…let’s be honest, there is a price for everything (especially if you have more than one grail set). In my opinion, this hobby will be niche forever and prices could be half of that they are, chipping would still be expensive. nothing is truly irreplaceable if you are willing to be patient after all, when prices are high, super rare chips/sets pop up everywhere

Have you looked at the custom set showcase thread? Not every set in there is CPC (most are). And it doesn’t have every CPC set that people have designed but it will give you the idea of what’s possible.

I once asked my players this question. After dismissing their initial answers of, "I don't care what I play with. Chips seems stupid. Why do you spend so much money on them", I actually got some real answers out of them.

Most of them prefer casino chips (Paulsons). This is because it gives them the feel that they're actually high rollers in a real casino. They think it's cool that we've liberated them and now own them in our own home.

For custom chips, they feel that they're gimmicky. Unless they are completely in love with your theme, the chip is going to mean even less to them than casino chips. And again, these are people that really don't care about things like edge spot progression or even colors.

So I guess what I'm saying is that I hate playing with the people I play with.

... But, seriously, I think it's a matter of what's more important to you. Is authentic casino chips with history important? Or is creating your own custom artwork in chip form and using that in your own home important?

It’s not just non-chippers. Although there are a few custom sets I love, and a bunch more that I appreciate, it all just feels very gimmicky. Match them with a dealer button and some custom bunch chips and all-in plaques, all on a matching custom cloth, and it just feels like play time.

And I don’t mean to rain on anybody’s parade - you do you. I’m just saying it’s another thing to consider. Are you getting customs to keep up with the Jones’s here on PCF, or will it actually make you happy to theme out your poker room like a theme park?

I'm going with CPC for two reasons:

1. The obvious one. You get to lovingly craft a set with colors, edgespots and inlays to your specifications. There's nothing quite like having a unique, customized set, and I've been fortunate enough at meetups to play with a variety of the creative ones our community has crafted, there's some real stunners

2. The one I haven't seen mentioned. CPC is pretty much the only game in town still willing to serve the home market with these options. To me that is a HUGE incentive to support them with our business, so we aren't left out in the cold with no providers.

Exactly my point. If this is what makes you happy, then you go for it. But that's perhaps why there should not be a choice between the two. In my mind, it's not one or the other. It's what makes you happy, and for the people here I believe what makes most of us happy is having both.
