I’m hosting a tournament in early December and am looking to switch things up from our usual format. In the past, we’ve gone with 10k or 20k starting stacks using a T25 base.

This time, I’d like to explore some deep stack/high roller options with starting stacks of 50k, 100k, or 500k. If I'm missing anything in between those, feel free to chime in. The following chip denominations are available:
  • T100
  • T500
  • T1,000
  • T5,000
  • T10,000
  • T50,000
  • T100,000
  • T250,000
  • T500,000

I’d appreciate any suggestions for starting stack breakdowns as well as blind schedules for each of these formats. I know this has been discussed in other threads, but the information is scattered, so I figured consolidating it here would be helpful.

Thanks in advance for your input! While I’m at it, I’ll tag the tournament king himself for some guidance: @BGinGA.

The most simple solution is to run a T500-base event. Requires four racks per 10 players (one each of 500, 1000, 5000, and 25000 denoms), and starting stacks can be easily scaled from just 50k stacks (10/10/7) up to 300k stacks (10/10/7/10) with the extra T5000s coloring up the T500 and T1000 chips. Adding some 100k chips (if going with the bigger stacks or multiple tables) allows the T5000s to be removed as well if play progresses that far.

A 300k stack event is pretty deep (300bb with 500/1000 blinds), pretty large (with 3 million chips in play per 10 players), and can easily utilize relatively uncommon 100k 'high roller' chips (and you can add a couple to each player's starting stack for huge T500k stacks).

L1 500 500 (optional)
L2 500 1000
L3 500 1500 (optional)
L4 1000 2000
L5 1500 3000
remove T500 chips
L6 2000 4000
L7 3000 6000
L8 4000 8000
L9 6000 12000
L10 8000 16000
remove T1000 chips
L11 10k 20k
L12 15k 30k
L13 20k 40k
L14 30k 60k
L15 40k 80k
remove T5000 chips
L16 50k 100k
L17 75k 150k
L18 100k 200k
L19 150k 300k
remove T25k chips (optional)
L20 200k 400k
L21 300k 600k
L22 400k 800k
L23 600k 1.2m
L24 800k 1.6m
L25 1m 2m
L26 1.5m 3m
L27 2m 4m
L28 3m 6m
L29 4m 8m
L30 6m 12m

A 10-player event with 300k stacks, 500/500 opening blinds, and 20-minute levels will last no longer than L17 (6:00 plus breaks). Larger stacks, bigger fields, and/or longer blind level times will all extend those numbers.

What adjustment would you personally make for the above when a 25k chip isn't available? Denoms jump from 10k to 50k.

Going to be running this tomorrow. We're going to go with a 100k stacks consisting of 10/10/7/2 and the above blind schedule recommended by @BGinGA. Thanks again Dave. Very helpful. I'll follow up with how it went.

@horseshoez How did this work? What quantity of 100k and 500k chips did you use/need?

Thought I’d take another stab and ask @horseshoez how that tourney worked out. Success? Lessons learned? Quantities of high denomination chips needed?

It actually went very smoothly. It’s been some time and I’ll have to browse through my photos to see what the starting stack looked like but we had a great time with it. There were a couple 1m plaques in play by the end of the night with about 3-4 people left. Very cool!

Based on the pics, looks like we went with a 10/10/7/5 using denoms T500/T1K/T5K, and T10K (uncommon but those IPS rectangular 10k's are beautiful). This is what the starting stacks looked like.

I should have taken more pics towards the end of the night, but as the night progressed this is what stacks looked like later on...
