D U N E (no, not Dunes) (1 Viewer)

The first trailer for the new movie was just released. It looks much better than previous attempts, but it's a hard book to make into a movie--as has been demonstrated previously. I reread the first trilogy in anticipation of the new adaptation. I will say that using Pink Floyd's Eclipse was a good choice.

“Deep in the human unconscious is a pervasive need for a logical universe that makes sense. But the real universe is always one step beyond logic.”

Current release date: 18Dec2020. "Only in theaters" seems a bit optimistic....

My favorite game when i was a kid playing on our Atari. :) Also, the old movie is very outdated, but i always liked it. I hope this turns out great, looks very promising.

I went to see Tenet in theaters (which was the first “big” movie since Covid) and 12 of 14 theaters had Tenet playing. No one else in the theater I was in. Didn’t see any other people other than staff in the cineplex. Box office looks grim right now for new releases.

Theater chains are going to be hard pressed to survive the pandemic. No new movie releases is the coffin nail. No way to draw in (even small) crowds for a doomed business model that exists on concession sales.

I don’t think theaters will be able to survive on their own. They were already operating close to the line. It is going to be quite a while until they are back to pre-Covid revenue. They are going to need help from somewhere.

Agreed.

It's hard for me to remember the last time I went to a cinema to see a film even pre-covid. And it was for an IMAX film. I have a decent large screen tv, comfy chair, pause button for bathroom breaks. For most films why do I need to go? I have my own refreshments. I'm content to sit at home and stream what I want to see.

The day of the 10-20 screen multiplex cinema is way past done. They need to provide a really big sensory experience to draw me back and that was way before covid. The only ones I see that will survive will be big single screen theaters that can provide that full experience.

I still like to go to the theaters but I am a film buff. Several theaters in my area offer a more premium experience. Couch like seating that had a deep recline. They offer restaurant quality food and drinks that you can eat at tables at your seat. My wife and I used to go and spend top dollar on that type of experience. I really like that experience. But I will also go alone midweek for the cheap showings and catch the latest big screen type films. But it will be a long time before we resume those habits. And I just don't see the average person going out on Friday nights to see the latest movie any more.

I don't know why theaters haven't adapted to other content. Specifically music concerts and sports. I know the NFL is particularly tight fisted with exclusivity rights, but I would love to watch a Monday Night Football game on the big screen.

I have an illustrator file somewhere with an inlay attempt for a Dune themed set. Basically the idea was to have a Casino based in Arakeen, Arakis with spice harvesters and maybe harkonen iconography in the background.

Love the book series. Don't wanna be that guy, but I'm always skeptical of the movie doing the book justice. As a huge fan, I'll probably see it, just like I saw Ender's Game, but I'm going in with a low bar.

Bummer about Dune getting pushed back. They did the same to Bond. With all of the delays and now the theaters closing down, I hope that the industry recovers. I don't go see movies super often, but it's something I definitely enjoy doing 1-2 a month.
