all van halen albums are awesome, drop the vocals and 3 is even a masterpiece. for the dave lovers since you like it raw, check out a little hidden gem that most dont know about..."van halen zero"...its as raw as it comes.

I'm a big Van Halen fan. Finally got to see them in 2015 when they played the Hollywood Bowl with Dave. I believe it might have been one of their last shows before Eddie died. Great show even though all were showing their age.

I did prefer the Dave albums. At first, wouldn't even listen to the Hagar albums. Took me a few decades to really even give them a chance. Then I looked at them more like a different band. The band was more mature. Lots of good songs, some sappy love songs unlike the raw rock of the Dave albums.

Definitely Eddie's fault that the band pretty much died. Fire Dave after their biggest hit album, then somewhat the same story with Hagar. He was somewhat friends with Howard Stern, used to call him. Howard even said it was like talking to a genius/lunatic.

Too bad, but many bands have the same story and just conflicting egos.

also a huge fan. the changes that happened were just natural progressions. for example "1984" much more resembles "5150" than anything prior if you take the vocals out of the equation. ed also used progressively more gain over the years until finally on different kind of truth his tome was full blown metal. that amount of gain wasnt available in 1978 so he worked with what he had. i took this shot from 2nd row in 2012.

Yes, agree that musically 1984 and close to 5150. I believe Alex released a book (Brothers) and didn't like when Eddie started including the keyboard. Even though he didn't mind cashing the checks, he made comments that Van Halen was dead after 1984.

this is a great point and a really interesting phenomenon - it’s wild how much the vocals can change a song.

my favorite example is stone gossard giving the same demo to two different singers and ending up with two completely different, equally great tracks:

and yes, i just derailed a derailment.

I was a junior in high school when the first album debuted in our part of the world. It was quickly banned at all school functions and school property, like school buses. We traveled quite a bit and had car battery powered boom boxes on our buses but couldn’t play any Van Halen 8 tracks - they were deemed to maybe be satanic. Nobody was sure, but they were not taking chances with our salvation at school. “Running with the devil” I mean it was self explanatory to our school board.
Hell beyond the title we weren’t sure what Dave was saying. But by my senior year satanism had become blase so the ban was lifted.

I walked away from a band festival once and bought a Cars 8track at a local Gibsons. Got about a block away, walking back, and two cars pulled up - it was sponsors hunting me down because they heard somebody was selling marijuana around the fairgrounds and they wanted to make sure I was safe.

So then you immediately starting searching for that Devil's Lettuce vendor is what I'm guessing...

Haha it was my 8track they were fighting about.
Our debate teacher always tried to be the “cool” teacher so he’d let us play it on those trips. He gave four of us extra credit for building a boom box out of a car stereo and speakers and a 12 volt battery. We built it in shop class and designed it to fit in the aisle if the buses. Pretty soon every school bus for every extracurricular travel had one for their bus.

Before I got to it, I was thinking 'Uh huh, Running With the Devil got it banned.' Plus, figure all the sexual energy and lyrics from Dave would deem it 'not appropriate' if someone was looking to ban that 'satanic rock n' roll'...

Ain't Talkin' bout love probably didn't help. Maybe Ice Cream Man. Though the rest are pretty tame.

Mentioning 8 track is dating you a bit lol. I remember receiving my first record player for Christmas, probably early 80's. It had an 8 track player and I had no idea what it was. Exchanged it for one that had a tape player. 8 track was all but extinct at that point. Though you could still order them through Columbia House.
