yeah, I'm in IT and know nothing about computers. I'm good with that.

I have an old desktop where the power supply crapped out and the USB ports (all but one) stopped working. If i replace the power supply, will this desktop work again? I'm fine with 1 USB, as i bought a hub, and can use my mouse and keyboard.

I'm hoping to get the pics off the hard drive, and potentially use this to run Tournament Director ... and maybe play Diablo 3 again....

Thanks

Mark

Depends on how old it is and if it did any damage to the m/b when it died (e.g. surge to the m/b). When you say "old", how old are we talking, and can you provide any other details (power supply make/model, motherboard make/model)?

I haven't used it in probably 2 years. It could be longer, I just can't remember. I'll take the cover off later and see what I have

The reason I ask, I have 2 laptops that haven't been plugged in in over 6 months. I tried to plug them in to charge, and there is no life left in them. I took one apart to look at changing that power supply, and it looked way to difficult for my skillset

Here is what I have:

First thing First- see if the power supply has a fuse right above or below the plug insert. It's possible a fuse could fix it.

Agree with the above. A 300W power supply is on the small side. If you added anything (internal drive, video card, etc) it may have overwhelmed it.

I bought one of these (might be a different brand) several years ago in order to copy files from obsolete computers. Worked great!

It sounds like your motherboard is on its way out too, given USB ports are failing. May just wind up being a money sink. PSU's are some of the least sexy and unfortunately overlooked components (as far as people buying a quality drive goes). Although on the opposite end of the spectrum, plenty of PC enthusiasts buy way more power supply than they actually need (either not understanding what their real needs are or just for dick wagging I suppose)

Computers are pretty cheap, but hopefully the new PSU will help you squeeze some more life out of it.

Your idea of cheap and mine might be a tad different. Since I rarely use one at home, I have a $100 max budget.... :-)

I'm a fan of cheap computers

HP Compaq dc7900 small or ultra form factor computers still have a lot of life, and could work for you (just load Windows)

They are cheap, and make great media PCs, I get them cheap, load kodibuntu, profit

Have Fun
An example on Ebay

If you need help just getting files off the hard drives I can help you with that if you can get me the drive. I'm not too far from you.

This is what I was going to say. Pretty easy to throw the drive in another machine or a USB connector and copy files off. I'll be happy to help if you end up going this route, though you'd have to ship me the drive.
