As a kid, I was allowed to open my stocking while I waited for everyone to get up.
At all ages, it was my job to "deliver" the gifts from the tree to the recipient. Then we'd all watch them open, oh, ah, etc. Then next gift. Even as a little one, I knew how to balance and stretch it out. One for me. One for my mom. One for me. One for my dad. One for me. One for my brother. One for me. Etc.
Now, as an adult and no parents on this realm, my family makes donations to charity in the family's name. This year, I sent $ to the Alzheimer's association. Both because I lost my mother to Alzheimers and because if they raise $1 million by the end of the month, they have a donor that will add another $1 million.
Lastly, I've gained the perspective that for PZ and other close people I give the gift when I find it and it feels right.
