Just wanted to share a very quick video of one of my chips being milled by a CNC machine...

I commissioned a friend of mine to mill about 1,000 Solid Paulson LCV HS for a relabel project I have... The chips are in very good condition although not mint and the HS was generic and NCV...

Based on a sample chip he gave me, the results were FANTASTIC! I even start thinking maybe a new HS is possible... It's THAT smooth...

Really cool. Do you feel comfortable giving any idea of the cost of the milling? I am always tempted by new projects...

I thought it was really cool also man...

It's running me 25¢ per chip but no shipping back and forth as he plays my league every other Wednesday... Not necessarily cheap but for the results, I thought it was worthwhile given the price I bought the chips for...

Already sent it to Mrs Bentax, she's a sucker for cute dogs.

As you recall, when I showed her your customs, she said I should go to Michigan and kidnap Bubbs, but leave the chips. :ROFL: :ROFLMAO: (she loved the chips too, she just meant she wanted your dog more)

.25 per is not too much at all for a good milling job imo. If they can legitimately get the chips smooth enough for a hotstamp that's a beautiful thing.

One other point Jack, IF, and it's a big if, the chips can be Hot Stamped again die to them being super smooth, then it's definitely worth it in my book...

Yeah I know very little about hotstamping other than how finicky those machines can be. If I were to embark on such a journey I'd definitely have a backup plan for labels and would send a stack of chips to @monkeydog for test stamping first.

He did some test stamping for me when I was deciding among hotstamp designs (we even ordered a few different dies just to see which stamped best) and I'm really glad I did. Way better to test first and correct than to go down the wrong road until you hit the end of the line.

@monkeydog has a set of Solid BCCs I sent him last year... My dies are ready and he started the stamping a couple of weeks ago... I will definitely send him a few chips once I get them so he can test them... My die are for BCC T-molds though but I'm certain he has dies that can fit Paulson Long Cane Version...

If he sees this post (and yours) it would be great if he could chime in...

Mrs. Bentax is the COOLEST!!!! ;);););)

Now, given my avatar and chip sets, you can probably see she's huge in my life... I'll jump in front of a train for her... So Mrs. Bentax will have to run me over... Now for Bubbles, she's a bit of an attention whore... You ring the bell, she'll jump in you guys' car and won't even look back... Next thing she knows she's in Albany, LOL!!!

Seems like I recall one of the aftermarket stampers (forget which one) that mentioned stamping milled chips presented it's own set of problems due to the area being recessed, not because of the smoothness (or lack thereof)....

Hoping monkeydog can pull it off. Not like he's busy enough already. :LOL: :laugh:

you mill both sides of the chip, center obviously is reduced possibly too thin to hot stamp, maybe gear can chime in on that....

also the thing i didnt like if you milled then hotstamped it just looks like crap with the recess edge...labels perfect, hotstamp not so perfect, my opinion

i think there were some pics at CT of mill then h/s, that i didnt think were attractive, i will try to find them and post

Was just thinking Dave, some SCV HS chips have a pretty significant recess... Maybe the HS process is way different... LCV though have almost no recess in my experience, it's hard even to relabel regular inlaid LCVs...

I see your point but as I just wrote above, some HS do have s reasonable recess... Fun Nites for example...

One problem I think it's bigger than the recess from a aesthetics point of view is that the part of the chips that was milled becomes really, really shiny and very, very smooth... So there's definitely a difference between the inlay area and the rest of the chip... At least using the CNC method...
 
The guys doing this for me just replied to my question:

He's taking 0.008" per side, not much at all... Well, I asked him to take as little as he could as long as the stamp was gone...

i am guessing paulson would stock pile blanks then run them thru hot stamp as home orders came in??? maybe?

labels are applied as the chips are made not as blanks...i am pretty sure of that

Yeah, the chips don't look spectacular but not too bad either... The sample I got had no double ring at all and it seems to have much less of a recess than these, although its difficult to say for sure... That's the beauty of CNC, you can program it very, very accurately...

Even in those pictures you can see how shiny the recess of the chip is... No texture like the rest, just super smooth...
 
This is very cool and a quarter per chip seems pretty fair to me. With the quality labels gear makes I bet you'd never know it wasn't an original inlay when finished. Did you warn him about lead dust?

i can understand that, its just a preference thing

like these TRK's that links is selling.....i would consider milling them to hot stamp as long as the milled out area wasnt too deep, again its just personal preference, if it was too deep you could always label them.....i actually prefer hot stamped chips in most cases than labels with exception to most ex-casino sets
