Chip Id ......clay? (1 Viewer)

Is there an interesting story about the death of Jack Todd?

Found a write-up by Gene Trimble on the marlowcasinochips web site. Abbreviated excerpt below:

At two o’clock in the morning on May 25th 1952 Jeptha Harvey “Jack” Todd, owner of the Jack Todd Company ( Diamond mold), lost control of his car on a Kansas City street and crashed into a tree. Todd died as a result of injuries suffered in the crash, age 58.

Bill Christy and Bud Jones bought out the Jack Todd business after his death. Four months later Bill Christy and Bud Jones register their business with the State of Missouri.

Diamond mold:
- Jack Todd, Kansas City: Feb 9, 1933 - May 25th 1952
- Christy Jones: 1952-1965
The records went to Paulson in 1965, and were destroyed when purchased by GPI in 2001.

It's my understanding that all the Christie & Jones Chips, including the TH&C, were made by the Burt Co for them, & Burt also made the Paulson TH&C's as well, until approx the early-mid 1970's, when Paulson created their own manufacturing system .. & that from ' at least ' the 1950's onward to the 1970's, , essentially all clay chips ( that weren't TRK ) were made by Burt Co , regardless of what the box said ( "Mfgrd by Marion & Co, Mfgrd by Christie & Jones" ect ..)
Is this essentially correct, & were the Jack Todd chips also Burt produced?

Correct. The only unknown is who made the diamond mold chips for Jack Todd prior to USPC selling out to Burt Co. Could have been either company, although I suspect it was Burt Co.

I was always under the impression that USPC manufactured the chips prior to selling their equipment and that side of the business to Burt. I posted the USPC manufacturing records from 1933 a few posts up. Each distributor would order blanks from USPC and then hot stamped them for their own customers. USPC also made Large Crowns for TR King, befor they starting making their own chips. I have a pic of those records somewhere, too.

Oops sorry about that Dave.

Here is the link to all the USPC records. it is on the MOGH site:

Hi Blaster you are correct about C&J with the Top Hat and Cane mold. Burt made all of those chips. The Jack Todd's diamond mold was made a lot earlier and pre-dated C&J. After Burt purchased USPC's equipment in the mid to late 40's, clay chips were only made by Burt and TR King for the longest time. I want to say the Chain mold was made by someone else, but i can't access my notes at the moment.

Here's a pretty old article written by Howard Hertz. It has a little history on manufacture's and distributor's. Howard aka as Howdy, was one of the club's chip pioneers and wrote and researched quite a bit.

Thanks for this! Dunno how I've never ran across it before; I've always wondered exactly what molds were produced by USPC but never really researched it. Good stuff.

Do you happen to know the dates that Hispania was making chips on the scroll mold? I'm pretty sure it doesn't go back prior to the 1980s, but have no proof.....

I don't have any notes on Hispania. I do have a note on ABP (Casino Supplies, LTD), based in London and they sold the Scroll mold between 1960-80s and sold primarily in Europe, Africa and Asia. I am not sure where those notes came from. Man i need to take better notes on the source of the info.

Hmm after researching a little more, i think the ABP mold and the Hispania scroll molds are different. so ignore the above.
