Sitting Out
Hey what's up everybody? I actually signed up on there back in 2020 and purchased some Paulson's from another user, which I had been looking for to add to my set. I never really posted though, so it looks like I'm restricted from commenting on other conversations...so I figured I'd try to be more active, and make a post saying hello.
I used to have some killer home games back in the early 2000's in Virginia, so I decided to buy a nice set. I had played with the Tangiers brass chips at a different home game I went to, and really liked them so I picked some up. I loved the way they look and feel, but once you stack about 10 or more, they start to wobble, and if the table moves at all, the stacks tip over...it because a pain in the ass. I decided to sell those (I kept a few for myself, which are shown below), and upgrade to Paulsons. This was around 2005 or so, and Paulson was phasing out public sales, but you could still find them through online vendors at (compared to now) pretty reasonable prices. To accommodate our $0.25 / $0.50 home games, I wound up with a set of mixed denominational and non-denominational chips, which kind of bothers me now on an OCD level, but at the time it was the best option to be able to get this set.
Sadly though, I moved out of the area a few months after making the upgrade, and haven't found any players in the places I've lived to start up another home game. So they've pretty much sat in the case their entire lives, except for a couple of times that I've oiled them so they won't dry out.
A couple of years ago I found this site, and also YouTube videos by "hobbyphilic", and started getting into chips on a collector level. I've learned a lot, and now really enjoy nerding out on the intricate details of the chips. I'll go to casinos now and analyze their chips, figure out if it's a Paulson or not, study the inlay and stamps, etc. I love it. It seems like a pretty expensive rabbit hole to go down, so I haven't pulled the trigger on a second set yet, I'm still looking around trying to see what I like / want, or if I'm content to admire them from afar.
With all that said; it seems like back when I bought my chips was the golden era of casino quality clay chips being made for, and sold to the public. Now, it seems like Classic Poker Chips is seen to be the highest quality clay chips on the market, but to be honest, the slightly inconsistent size, shape, coloring, etc. is a bit of a turn off to me. So I'm curious, is there another company out there that's producing high quality, Paulson-like chips today that I'm missing? I don't think there is, and it's pretty disappointing.
Anyway, I'd say that's about enough typing for now. Look forward to chatting with some of you in the future!
