Hello. I am new to the chip game.

I have used the same "custom clay" not sure of manufacture, set for years with no problem, until we had a chip cheat bring is own chips. He got my game for $1200!!!

I run a 1/2 with 10 players usual $500 buy-in, twice a week and could end up with $15k on the table.

(I HATE borrowing) The last 2 weeks I had to borrow a set from another player, to insure integrity in the game. (Indiana Grand Casino chips) I was surfing Apache and eBay and he suggested I visit here for better quality and safer buying experience.

I am looking for a set that I can play that is rare, old and hard to counterfeit. One that you can't just go buy $500/$1000 chips off eBay. Does this exsist? Any recommendations? I have searched the classifieds and found many cool sets, but as far as scarcity I do not know. They seem to be the same sets.

From what I have gathered treading the listings are dominated by a few very big players with stacks upon stacks upon stacks.

So I ask, what is the best way for me to gather something like this?
Thanks for helping a new guy!
Thanks

Yikes. When you say custom clay, do you mean that you made your own chips or you bought them? Can you share a picture of the chips that were in use?

I think more people will chime in, but to be totally secure, you would need to order your own custom designed set from one of the chip makers (Classic Poker Chips, etc). That will make it harder to counterfeit.

Check out the Custom Poker Chips forum on this site for more info: https://www.pokerchipforum.com/forums/custom-poker-chips-general.30/

Good luck!

For your purpose, you may want to look into having a custom set made so it is one of a kind. You could spend more money and go the CPC route for actual clay chips, or you could get in on one of the group buys and get some custom Tina chips from @justincarothers. Both will give you some nice chips that no one will be able to buy off a shelf.

Can anyone make custom chips?

My first question would be what is your budget? If you got stuck for $1200 then I'd say you're budget should have a basement of $1200. With that in mind, the safest way to go would be CPC custom chips. You could have your own inlay created by someone here, and that would give you a very high level of safety. Could probably get this set for $2500-$4k, depending on the edge spot patterns you choose. That's the ultimate set for safety, you have control over your design and how many chips get made through CPC.

You could purchase any number of the used sets that come up for sale in the classifieds here, but, depending on which chips you choose, could cost as much as CPC's, or more, and still not be as safe.

Another custom option is going through a vendor like Broken Arrow (Justin Carothers) and having a set of "Tina" ceramics made with your custom design. These chips, being that they're made in China, could have your design stolen, and/or, someone else having the same chip made in China. Unlikely, but, still a concern.

Sorry to hear about you getting cheated, that sux.

I am currently looking at a set on here for $3900

+1 on the CPC route. They have made chips for casinos, and maintain an eye toward security. Your set will never be made for anyone else but you.

A little "toy" to get you started: http://www.pokerchipdesigntool.com/

Toughest part is the inlay design, which I am happy to help with (for free). I can do something pretty basic, but if you want something more complex or specific, there are artists available here that can help (for a fee).

Welcome to PCF! Some nice customs should clear this up.

Out of curiosity, how did this go down? Was it a one time hit and run or were they slowly introducing chips over time?

I'm going to also jump in and say if you want high security, your best bet is full customs that are hard to get or tamper. You could go with Paulson over-label/relabel chips, but it still possible, though very unlikely, that these could be counterfeited.

A much better solution is full custom manufactured specifically for you. For clay this would be CPC, and for ceramic my personal favorite would be BRPro. Both will fit your budget. Get samples of both to see what you like better, then start to work on your design. Since you're already paying for full custom, you can really make something nice and unique for your game.

For a quicker turnaround and still custom, you could order a blank set of Tina's from @justincarothers in whatever color and edgespot patterns you want and then do custom labels for your set. Gear labels are nice but again, a long wait time. Sticker Mule has extremely fast turn around times and look great. This would be your fastest in-hand option and would give you a one of a kind set. Your security is a bit better than going 100% from Tina because you are having custom printed labels 3rd party (in USA).

Going this route is also saves you quite a bit of money over the CPC route. Just food for thought.

Not to mention, the free hot sauce you will receive with your order from Sticker Mule is quite tasty!

You could get a set of BR Pro or Tina straight away fully customized. Then wait for your set to end all sets cpc chips to come in. The cpc chips could possibly take up to a year to be in your hands. I suspect that if you didn't care much about mold choice the A mold would be the fastest option. This way you would have multiple custom sets at your disposal and could switch things up randomly as was previously suggested.

So, lets slow down just a bit, really dial in what you're looking at for a set.

Can you tell us, do you rake the game?
What is the break down you're looking for?
no rake
usually
1x100
10x25
26x5
20x1

something like that. I usually let players choose how they like to recieve their 500. some perfer more of one that the other

Someone may want to point out the lead time on a custom CPC order is quite long . . . I don't know exactly how long myself.
Custom is cool except I don't want them to look goofy. I like the look of real used casino chips. Yea I'm going to need them before the end of this month. I cant keep borrowing.

I question now. I think it was a hit and run! I have never been off before. He played myabe a handfull of times. I noticed because my chips are aged and well played. The edges on the new ones were still quite bright. You can tell he tried to wear it down but did not look good. He plays in other games so we have an APB out.

You need custom, full stop.

CPC (expensive, long wait, but probably the best feel, great security.)
BR Pro Poker (custom design will be secure, reasonable price, quicker turnaround, but you'll need someone to do design work for you. That said there are plenty of designers here)
Sun Fly (custom design will be secure, reasonable price, quicker turnaround, but you'll need someone to do design work for you. That said there are plenty of designers here)
Tina (custom design should be secure*, very reasonable price, reasonable turnaround, designer need here too)

That are some other options (Matsui and Abbiati) but they are pricey, have minimum orders that might be a problem, and have a bit of a wait (not as bad as CPC but not as good as BR or Tina).

Do a bit more reading here. All the info you could want is here.

Unfortunately a month will likely not be doable for customs. Your best best for that timeframe will be the classifieds here. Be aware though that there are some restrictions on the classifieds section. Not sure off-hand but think there is a minimum post count required and maybe even a membership time frame requirement before you can post there.

I’d get full customs and take ur time do it right. Even Paulson relabels. You learned from it. Don’t invite him again. You probably won’t have an issue anyway. This is very rare and shocking a player/friend would be a POS at a non raked friendly game.

BRPro for quick turn around and security of your custom design. Tim’s chips are nice as well but being in China I’m not sure of design security. CPC chips are an ultimate answer but will take a very long wait time which for a twice a week game is not feaseable. Good luck, I feel for you on your loss. Thieves suck.

Why did you have to do that? I'll be stuck on this all evening.

Yes, anyone can make their own set with their own design, though limited on type of chip manufactures. Like others said above, the lead time can be quite long on customs, so maybe you buy a decent set for your immediate needs and then that gives you time to design and make your own custom set. Also, you can always sell the first set you buy later. Good luck!

Welcome to PCF @2xdown !
Sad to have a rat at the table...

Customs take some time, that you don't have obviousely.
Here in the classifieds you'll find a nice set for sure.
Placing a wanted add (what you are searching for + budget) helps a lot!

I guess there are some guys who are willing to let go a set right now.

Good luck!
