China clay smell (22 Viewers)

I have a set of Majestics that are going on 3 years old now. The smell had gone away for the most part. About a month or so ago I opened the case and the smell was overpowering. Then I noticed my 5s looked really dull. Picked a few out of the rack and they can be snapped in half with very little pressure now. Same thing happened with the nickels. Quarters, ones, and 25s are just fine.

Anyway, I've moved to ceramics now. Think I'm done with CCs. This is the second set that has done that to me.

I see no future market for CC if fully custom ceramic is obtainable for the same price. And that's not a bad thing.
My CC royals feel good, and sound good. I much prefer these attributes than the ceramic feel and higher pitched sound. Jmo. Fully custom ceramic is one side of the coin, the other is the feel and sound. What good is a custom chip if it doesn’t sound and feel good? I might change my tune in the future, I am eyeing up the 43mm hybrid ceramic web mold… but so far I expect my royals to be my main set for many years to come.

i wonder if the royals are any different, its been 4 years since they debuted has anyone heard any stories? I have a set of royals and i love them.

I guess I’m one of the lucky ones b/c I don’t notice much of a smell at all from my china clays
I guess we are in the same boat. I got my first set of cc Dunes tonight, and I couldn’t smell anything, even fresh out of the sealed shipping ziploc bag. If I really dig my nose into it, I can small a faint something, but I really have to put effort into it.

I opened my Majestic tournament set for the first time in a year; a set I bought used off a good member of this forum 6 years ago.

They still got a hint of it.

It's a feature if you weren't aware.

Ooh-wee, they stink! I just picked up 800 Pharaohs from eBay and they were kept (and arrived) in a Versa Games case.

Like a cross between buttcrack and petrol.

I racked them and will air them out for a few days I think.

i convinced a game host who was using dice chips to upgrade to Apache’s Bank series, and did not notice any smell.

I also bought a couple barrels of Royals to make custom seating/bounty chips, and again had no odor issues with them.

Is this problem specific to some other brands/manufacturers?

i feel like it might be based on the person. like, if you think cilantro tastes like soap, you're probably also going to hate the smell of china clays.

My Royals set smelled so bad I sold them. I also think cilantro tastes like soap. Coincidence? I think not.

Thanks, I will take the lids off to how much of a difference it makes.
I did the dunk in water-mixed-with-oil method (check out the post on the apache store chips site), but after I cleaned them with soap (non-oxy clean soap bc it could affect the color) and then I oiled the edges manually to let it soak in. I got great results and it didn’t take too long. I’m very happy with the results

I have both Majestic and Royals and the scent is still somewhat present, not as strong as when I first got them but still detectable.

I think cilantro tastes like soap, but I don't smell anything from my China Clay chips unless I put them right under my nose and take a big whiff. The smell is definitely there, but it's not offensive, and it doesn't linger or spread out over time. I store my chips in the Apache racks with lids, and I haven't opened them for months, so I expected it to be relatively strong when I opened a rack. But I have had the opened rack in front of me for a while now, and don't notice anything.
