Take it to a field/park 10+ miles away and let it go. Or mail it to someone who sent you loose chips...
 
Back in the 80's my buddy shot one with a 22 in a trap just like this. The smell was unbelievable. I do not recommend that.
 
I set the trap to catch whatever keep digging holes under the shed and taking dumps in the yard.

Plan A: I'll talk to it, we'll become friends, and it won't be afraid and spray.

Plan B is to cover the cage with plastic, line my truck bed with plastic, and re-locate it far away.
 
Delaware has weird rules about relocating certain species. I got a possum that was living in my crawl space. Moving it was illegal which left me no option but humanely dispatch it. I love animals so there was no joy in this. Sucked extra when 8 babies crawled out of its pouch and I had to dispatch them too. That was a crappy day.

Whatever you do, just be careful. In addition to the obvious risks associated with skunks, they are also a rabies vector species. You don't want to catch that disease.

I did not kill it.

I transported it to a park and laid the can down. Fucker would not crawl out. Had to dump it, then it would not run away. Finally prodded it to go and when it eventually did, then I had to clean p the garbage it got dumped with.
