I occasionally read about casino checks. Sometimes it is even spelled chèques. But it doesn’t seem to be any different than a casino chip. Am I missing something?

Casino checks are used as actual currency in the casino (just like a paper check or e-check is worth cash). A chip is a no-value instrument, such as tournament or roulette chips. Checks are used in poker cash games, but chips are used in poker tournaments.

But even in the industry sometimes the nomenclature gets mixed up. I've seen lots of reference to roulette chips as checks/cheques, even though they are not denominated and have no redeemable value outside the roulette table. Cash cheques/chips are the ultimate fungible token at the casino of issue.
