Beginners Sample Pack (2 Viewers)

So I’ve spent a fair amount of money on sample chips. I’ve seen it mentioned a few times and wish I had the option when I first started. So here is a basic sample set of chips to get an idea of what you might like and hopefully save you a little money so you have more to spend on what you want.

What you get:

View attachment 145518 View attachment 145519

10 of each style; Milano, Scroll, Poker Knights, Sunfly Hybrids (unlabeled), Chipco (basically the same as GOCC), Mint, OWPS color wheel (Sunfly ceramics), Nexgen, Majestic (blank), Unicorn.
If you’re looking for CPC or Paulson chips there are other ways to acquire those at reasonable prices.

Rules:
Please make any suggestions as to what you’d like to see included.

This is a loaner sample set and I will be requiring a $60 deposit (please see PayPal PCF rules/warnings) plus SFRB shipping cost. If the set grows it’ll need to go into a MFRB and deposit will grow but feedback might cause that to happen.

Deposit will be refund after the chips have been received back by me in satisfactory condition. Things happen and these are intended to be shuffled so I won’t be super picky but broken or lost chips need to be replaced so I’ll have to charge for that.

Let me know if you have questions or anything you think I missed.
How are those majestic chips. Is it worth buying a set of those now or waiting a little bit until I can find a set of top end paulsons for a reasonable price

Brutal.

I am just starting my journey here, and I’m not good at the internet - I don’t use Reddit or social media, even though yes I am an elder millennial

I don’t want to be a tool and ask questions that have been answered, but I’m also struggling to find what I’m looking for.

A) it’s amazing that you put this together - major good karma to you.

B) I’m ok with spending money on samples, but I don’t know which chips are the “same” - basically trying to figure out a list of the main “types” before I get too far into the weeds - meaning the specific thing to buy rather than “china clays” or “Tina”.

It seems like when you buy samples you’re getting multiple chips of the same type, just in different colors or maybe molds.

C) is there a list of chips to sample that would serve as a 101, noob starting point? Like, from dice chips to Paulsons, just to have felt them all in my hands.

D) would it make sense for one or more folks to purchase barrels of each, and then make pre-packaged “official” PCF noob sample sets for *sale* rather than loan, so this great idea doesn’t get sunk by a random douche?

E) does this already exist and I just can’t find it because I’m a dum dum?
Hey Big Tim, I started this journey a couple months ago and admit it's all a bit overwhelming... tons of jargon, lots of convoluted business history, and then changes in manufacturing technology that result in about 5 different types of chips to consider, all at different price points.

I bought a ton of samples, and then have been accumulating barrels (20 chips), and perhaps I have enough miscellaneous extras now to put together a new traveling sample set... I'll tinker with that this week. I wasn't a part of the earlier traveling set which dropped off sometime a year or more ago, not sure what happened to it.

Hobbyphilic on YouTube is probably the best source for seeing human hands playing around with different chips. He's here on PCF and has tons of videos over many years, with annual "guide to buying chips 2024"-style titles that go over all the main types of chips that are available. I need to see photos/videos to make sense of chips, can't just read :)

I agree. Hobbyphilic is why I joined the forum. He’s a cool guy, and I enjoy how he presents information.

As I am new on my poker chip journey, I wanted to post my interest in multi-manufactured chip sample sets…

I know at least, I don’t want any Monte Carlo chips. They’re like… dice chips 2.0, in my view.

I pulled sample shuffle stacks (10x each) from my growing hoard and first you'll see everything, then this bunch pared down to 20 different stacks which would be reasonable to ship to PCF folks looking to get hands on.

The top photo has all kinds of uhh, crap, and some nicer stacks that aren't easily attainable, mostly due to being available via PCF classifieds or eBay, and often at great expense.

Whereas this selection of 20 different stacks gives a pretty comprehensive overview of what a new chipper might consider, and could find easily on Amazon, Apache, BR Pro, and other poker retailers, as well as more common PCF Classifieds listings.
  • Ceramics / Hybrids - both casino grade and home grade
  • China Clay
  • Slugged Plastic (maybe to many versions of this included)
  • Fancier home-market plastic
  • Casino Plastic (Abbiati, Matsui, Gemaco, can add Bud Jones soon)
  • Casino Clay - vintage and new, both Paulson and CPC/ASM stacks

Samples20x.jpeg

I don't know the best way to arrange getting this to someone who's interested. I don't really want to take a deposit/escrow, but also don't want these chips walking away... And if the evaluator can cover shipping both ways, it should come out to $20-30 total in a nice sturdy re-usable package, perhaps with return-label included in the box already.

I'm flexible! Would have loved to get my hands on this 6 months ago, and am willing to facilitate it to worthy folks now.

i would love to try out the sample set. I’m new to this and looking to get my first set soon!

Hi @ItsMiller if you're willing to pay shipping both ways ($30ish total?) I'll send you a box of samples to try out. Shipping will probably be a bit more if you want two racks worth. 10 chips of each style, so it can either be one rack, 10 styles, or two racks, 20 styles (racks being 100 chips).

I use the USPS Click-n-Ship which allows me to buy a shipping label, print it out, and stick it on a box. I'd do this to you, and then you'd probably have to do the same, or find another way to ship them back.

yeah i wouldn’t mind paying for shipping both ways, Anyway you could send a return label in the box?
Also if i do one rack only would you let me pick which ones i’d like to recieve?

One rack, you pick, works great

Most of the casino grade stuff isn’t for sale in premade sets so you’ll have to find it on the classifieds here, and will generally be a higher price point. Fun to get your hands on it, but might not help make the purchase decision easier.

I’ll see if I the click-n-ship allows for a premade return label

Yeah i’m only interested in the stuff that’s easily attainable anyways. I wanna see what ceramic and clay are like

hello ive been lurking on here for a while and i just now make an account my current set is the unicorn on amazon but i was wondering is china clay worth upgrading to since i only play baccarat with friends at home and not poker

anyone looking for a cheaper avenue i recently purchased a sample set of Phoenix Card Room Chips and actually pretty impressed with the quality over other chips in similar price points. I wanted to see if they could be stand ins until i complete a cash set of Paulson's but they're not quite that good. would recommend them over the monte carlo chips though! if i could go back i would get these over the full set i have. Amazon

This is rad, I'm getting into chips and seems like a good place to start.

What chips would you like to get hands on with? I’ll send 10x 10 chips if you’ll cover postage each way, about $25 total

So any 10 chips you’d like to get your hands on, PM me

Newbie here.

What a great idea! I'm super interested in getting my hands on some chips before buying anything.

Is it complicated if I'm in Canada :)

Thanks!!

Not sure how it would work shipping across Canada and back :( Probably double the shipping cost plus possible tariff costs even though they maybe shouldn't technically apply since it's not a sale. If you'd like to dig into it I'd consider sending samples as I've done CONUS.

No worries. Thought I would ask :)

It's a noble cause. Keep it up!

What are you looking at?

Tina's? ASM/CPC? Paulson? Bud Jones?

Shoot me a PM. If you're willing to pay shipping, I can put together some samples. Depending on what you want, I you can pay and I can refund the purchase price (less shipping) when you return them, or you can keep them if you like them.

Hi there, would anyone possibly be willing to let me check out some Tina Mold Hybrids?

I’m interested in getting some Tina Mold Hybrids (Tangiers are catching my eye) in the next group buy, however the sample offered is $25+s/h for a mixed barrel which seems like a little overkill for me.

Ideally would love 6-10 chips to check out! Would happily pay for shipping to me and back, or a fair price + shipping if you wanted me to keep them.

My current situation: have dice chips, and I’m looking to upgrade with a 500 chip micro stakes purchase. Currently have the Olympus chip sample ordered and a pending sample of Tiki Kings & Majestics.

I’m not trying to go overboard on too many samples, especially of super-nice clays like Paulsons or CPC’s, because frankly I’m on a budget and really shouldn’t spend more than $250-300 or so on 500 chips. And don’t want the samples to eat into my budget too much. I think a Tina sample would probably be the only other ones I’d like to check out, unless y’all highly recommend some other ones that fit my budget.

EDIT: I was able to get a sample. Thanks guys!

Are sample sets still available to try? I'd looking to get my hands on some casino clays. Thanks.

I'd be happy to do this again. Looks like you can't DM yet... I think you need to post a bit more before that functionality is unlocked. I'll have time next week to put this together if you're interested. Until then, search for how to get your DMs opened and we can chat.

I thought I said this in a previous post but mine never got returned.

I might try to revive this with some various Tina chips and have to look to see what else is available on the market think most of the ones I had are no longer available.

Sounds good. I'll DM you once I'm allowed to do that.

Wanted to leave a shoutout to @Gus on this thread. he put together a sample chip box for me to test out based on my preferences. The sample box included shuffle stacks of 10 different types of chips, including very premium chips in mint condition. It was very helpful for someone new like me to get to feel a variety of chips across different conditions. I really appreciate forum members doing this for new members. Thanks again!
