Wanted to know if there is a noticeable quality difference between the Apache cases that Harbor Freight sells vs the Nanuk cases. I'm looking at the Nanuk 935 or the Apache 5800 at the moment.

The way the Nanuk latches alone make it worth the extra hundo imo. Couldn’t be happier with mine. Was very impressed. That said, I’m sure the Apache will hold up to the job no problem.

Another question, when they are in the horizonal position with the carry handle up, do either one have a tendency to tip over?

I have an Apache 3800 and 4800 and they are very stable when on their side. I would assume a 5800 would be similar. How many chips can you fit in a 5800? I imagine it would be heavy as heck unless it has rollers or something.

Same - Apache 3800 with 600 chips and an Apache 4800 with 975 chips. The 4800 is heavy, but manageable.

I agree - both are stable on the side.

I couldn't make up my mind, so I picked up the Apache 5800 from Harbor Freight and ordered the Nanuk 935 from B&H on Tuesday. Now that I had a chance to inspect each one, I went with the Nanuk for 3 reasons.
  • the mechanism that holds the lid open works better.
  • the latches are way better (as some of you said)
  • much more stable in the horizontal position, no tipping over.
But all that does come at a cost. $99 vs $199. Depends how much you value the contents, I guess. For chips, the weight alone makes it a no brainer to go with the Nanuk IMO. The peace of mind is worth it. I'm using mine for some RC Transmitters. I had to get a little creative with the foam because I wanted to use the precut hard foam that came with the transmitters.

Could you take a closer picture of the latch for Nanuk 935. I wonder what is better about it. With my apache 4800 that latch is firm.

I bought the Apache with wheels and the handle. The thing I don’t like about it is that the handle is a bit flimsy, especially with 1300 chips in the case. Everything else seems okay. We will see how it performs over time …..

Here you go. The latches are firm on both cases, but the Nanuk has slide mechanism that has to be pushed down before you can unlatch it. A little extra protection.

Since my case will be lighter with just RC transmitters, I would have preferred a 935 with no wheels. I had to do some notching of the hard and soft foam to get everything to fit. The wheel wells protrude inside more than they do on the Apache 5800 case.

I had an issue with the wheel wells as well. To solve that I bought a few of the below foam pads and added a couple under the bottom foam pad that came with the case. Raising the base foam solved the wheel well issue.

I actually tried that. I didn't have the extra case height to do it. It made closing the lid with more force than I felt comfortable with. I'm glad it worked out for you.

2,100 in each of the two center cases. I beat and bang mine all over the country and never a single issue with any of them.
I am convinced Ben is a covert Apache representative sent in to brainwash PCF into submission. ;)

It's working!

Seriously Ben, you have to ask them for commission.

Wow! That's an awesome collection!
Cough... cough... and it is ALL your fault good sir!

I was completely content with my 3 crappy sets which were better than anyone's chips I had played with in 20 years!

That is an unbelievable amount of cases. How many chips do you have total?

Drive up to Westminster and find out one day, Stop derailing the bosses thread Jon... y'all trying to get me in trouble!

Plus... who's counting?

56,698 in 39 playable sets, plus singles, samples, projects not included in that #... plus I rounded down when counting! Haha

Is the nanuk handle made out of metal or plastic? How is the sturdiness?
A hard plastic with a soft rubber over mold for the grip. The Apache has a similar handle, but the rubber part doesn't seem as soft.
