I know this is a stupid thing to say out loud, in public, but I'm going for it. I don't like playing poker with women. I don't know why. I love women. More of my close friends are women than men; I promise you I'm not a misogynist. But when it comes to poker, I just don't like it very much when there are women at the table.
One of my buddies says it's because women are harder to read than men. I don't know if that's true, and that kind of generalization seems dangerous. But maybe that's it - who knows, like I said i can't figure it out.
Any thoughts?

I think that's a broad (no pun intended) generalization. I know some women that are effing tough to play against simply because they're legit good at the game and takes losses like a champ. Others I've played with play horribly, refuse to work on their game, take bad beats worse and have crummy attitudes. Same as dudes though. I find the gals in our game are best at organizing games and seem to have connections to people that lot of the guys in the game don't have. Different women add different dynamics to the game.

I think it's understandable that you recognize behavior patterns of that women that you've played with, however, you might have a small sample size to go off of to make the generalization.

I remember a time where I told someone that I didn't like female vocalists. I was listening to a lot of CBC radio and there's a lot of women in the singer/songwriter genre and their singing is very whispery and in a serious tone. I realized later it was the whispery serious tone that I didn't like and there were plenty of male singer songwriters that I hated for the same reason.

I have no problem playing poker with women. Almost all of the regulars in our group have thick skin; a requirement of any decent poker player.

They can take beats and give them. Bust chops and take some too.

If it is a players I don’t know I treat them like I would any stranger, be polite and pretty PC.

I try to figure out then if they are an actual player that knows the game (and competent) or just a casual rec player. I find that most women at the casino take the game pretty serious. It can be intimidating, so for them to make that effort to come into a man’s world type setting they want to be there and I’ll give them some respect for that.

I’ll play with anybody, unless they’re a total a-hole or a cheater and it’s totally not about respect. I’m just saying that when I am playing with women, there’s just sigltly less comfort.
But if I was in another social situation, I’m as likely be in the kitchen, chatting with those women as out on the deck, man-talking with the guys.

I‘ve said it before, on both forums. I don’t really like playing with women, aside from multi-table tournaments, which is why I have always set minimum ages for my home game — 25 for men, 106 for women.

It has nothing to do with skill. There are women — including Marsha, for example, and many in the BARGE universe — who will gladly eat your lunch at the poker table.

It’s that I view poker, other than large tournaments, as mostly a social event. When there are women at the table, the range of discussion and the language used are diminished, for probably imagined considerations. That’s not on them — it’s on us. But it’s a fact, and for me it reduces enjoyment of the game.

P.s.: This cuts both ways. My wife agrees, which is why I don’t try to horn in on some of her social activites.

P.p.s.: Women are much nastier and cutthroat in formal tennis competition than are men. That might apply to poker as well, so be cautious...

^^ Well stated, and I agree with everything said. Well, maybe not the hatred for whispery singing. :)

I get what Larry's saying, but the only subjects that are taboo at our games are religion and politics (take it outside if you want), otherwise it's not any different at our games whether or not any women are present. And some of the gals at our game curse like sailors, and have no problem telling you where you can stick your cock.

I do agree this was typo

You beat me to it Dave, Our gals cuss worse than most of the guys. 100 percent on no religion/politics.

I don't mind at all...with one exception. I don't like when a guy brings his girlfriend/wife where she isn't interested in poker. They are a drag on the game and detract from the table dynamics.

But in general absolutely ok with women, and the table discussions are the same either way

Short funny story.....

We were playing a holiday tournament on New Year's Eve at a couple's home a few years ago, and the big screen was showing the New Year's celebration broadcast. Jennifer Lopez (I think) came onstage singing, wearing spiked red heels and a full sheer bodysuit that left almost nothing to the imagination. Understandably, play briefly stopped as everybody turned around to see.

The male host -- who was salesman of high-end shoes for women at Saks Fifth Avenue -- immediately said, "Damn, look at those shoes, those are xxxx and sell for $2000 a pair," nailing both the brand and the cost. One of the female players said, "Who the hell is looking at her SHOES?!! Look at that fucking ass!!" It was epic. :D

My games are guys only, and that's only because it started out as a "guys night". Our charity and couples games we encourage the gals to play, but the monthly games - dudes only.

Ugg, There's one guy at our game that has done this and is oblivious to how awkward it is for everyone, including her.

Can't remember where I read it, might have been Caro's Book of Poker Tells, but the author was saying "women's intuition" is actually an inherently better (better than men's, anyway) ability to read people and situations.

So that's one reason not to allow 'em.

My preference is NOT men only. To be honest to much men only time gets tedious after a while.

Interesting...

When I first started playing in tournaments over 10 years ago, in card clubs, I could safely stereotype women players as weak/passive until they demonstrated otherwise. These days, that no longer applies. I agree with above, most women players in casinos are at least decent and there are plenty who are very good.

In home games I always prefer to play with at least a few women in the tournament, definitely makes it feel more like a grown-up activity rather than just a bunch of knuckleheads drinking beers and scratching their balls.

I'm really grateful that I have several women regulars in my game, some are better players than others, but as I said – it definitely makes me feel more like a grown-up and it also helps with recruiting new players to see the game as more legitimate.

It’s always just the girls :D

I wana play in this game

It’s ladies night!

Hosted a few games to teach the neighborhood ladies how to play poker.

Awkward conversation. “Um ya, wanna come down to my basement? Ha. Actually, I was pretty adamant that the ladies did all the organization. I just provided the venue and instruction.

Doesn't bother to me to have females. If i don't know them and they don't know our group it can be a little awkward because of the comments/topics/etc in an all male setting. But once they know that, and are ok busting balls with everyone else then it is fine.
Once had two females in a two table tourney and oh man when they were together they were worse than the men.

The only thing that really really bothers me is playing at the same table as my son. He is 25 so it's not like he isn't an adult, and he has played for years so he knows how to play, but as a parent I hate to see him lose, especially if it is me taking his chips.
