I'm graduating university in May and I've decided I want to reward myself with my own poker set.
Playing poker was the main way I could afford to enjoy my college experience after all.
My only problem is I don't know what I should get.
It will be my first personal set so I don't want to spend too much money, but I also want them to be nice enough that I'll be able to hold on to them for many years as it is something I'm going to want to look back upon fondly.

Ive looked at a fair few sets and I like the look of Monte Carlos, Milanos, and Outlaws. I was also looking at a Group Buy, and saw someone mention a Rounders set.
I'm new here and not sure how much a set of those would be, or how Group Buys really work.

I appreciate any suggestions!

I should probably mention I usually play 1/2 and I'm based in upstate NY rn.

Congrats on graduation!

You will get the repetitive: 'Get samples, what's you budget, etc.?'

This is like watches. You can get a $400 Seiko that is a nice watch and will last a long time and many people are happy with them. You can get a $3,000 Tag Heuer and love it. You can step up to a $40,000 Rolex. They all tell time and will last many years. This site is a bunch of people in the middle and high end. You can go as deep as you want in this if poker chips become your hobby. If you just want a nice set, get samples, pick you favorite and enjoy. If this is your hobby, and you want a keeper set, it will probably be a clay set.

Welcome and have fun.

Congrats for the graduation !

Go with your own (custom) CPC set ! If you really are into poker chips, it'll save you a lot of money as it's probably where you'll end up in the end. So skip the low / mid range products !

It'll be a long journey to design your own set but folks are here to help you. It's very rewarding journey !

Since this is for graduation and you're open to the Tina group buys (or CPC), you could design a custom set with the theme of your school or degree. Plenty of designers on PCF you could hire to help with design. Ordering in the group buys is easy and Justin will help you.

Congrats on your graduation. You've come to the right place. Do you research and find a set you like and if you don't end up liking them that much you can always upgrade.

New collector here. Can you still order custom sets from CPC?

Not right now. They've changed owners, moved cross-country, and are in the process of opening a new factory there. I think the latest update was that they are 2-36 months from possibly restarting production, pending landlord approval.

I believe this post has the last official status on CPC reopening. Supposedly very soon…..

Congratulations on the graduation!
If you can afford to play $1/2 as a student, be patient and wait for CPC to re-open.

Its really all about budget. You want to treat yourself, got $3k-$5k to get it on? You'll want to wait for CPC to reopen. If you have $1k or less, Tina and BRPro are where you want to be. I wouldn't consider an off the shelf set as treating yourself. Its just a good place to start off, which is okay for a fresh uni grad! In that case, Olympics are the best bang for the buck on market.

Did you get your set yet??
I didn't ended up pulling the trigger on anything. My thesis has been kicking my ass so haven't had time to think about anything else unfortunately.

Congratulations on the graduation!

You really don't need a huge bankroll to play 1/2. I started with £100 in my first cash game and my tracker says I'm over £16k profit now (don't have this as my bankroll as I have to use my roll to pay for life). I haven't decided on anything yet and will probably wait until I land a job and made sure I can stay in the country first.
More than likely, I will either opt for a customized Tina set or a Tina Rounders set. Though, I am sad that it's not the Rounders bear on the Tina chips, but I understand not wanting to step on CPC's toes by offering it. It's a shame their Rounders set is out of my budget.

Upstate is a term of art… How far up? (I’m mid-Hudson Valley
Central New York is probably a better description because geographically you can't get much more central NYS than where I am.
I say Upstate because I'm from England, so when I'm trying to explain that I'm not in NYC it's easier to use.
