Is there any practical use for hundred dollar chips?

I'm looking at placing my order. I'm never going to play in a game that uses lots of hundos, or even one hundo. I've designed a $100. I'd like to have a $100 to ogle. But I don't have a good reason to actually pay for them.

Maybe there is some use for them that I haven't thought of. I was talking with the floor at my local cardroom. Even with their high volume chip use, they don't use the $100 chip very much at all.

Maybe a rebuy stack could be a hundred dollar chip where the player then makes change at the table. Even then $25s could do that job unless the game is huge, which isn't happening in my universe.

What use might there be that I haven't considered?

Practicality? Bah!
If we’re discussing chips that may or may not see much use, I’ve got a whole section of my closet of chips I have no business owning. :ROFLMAO:

Buy what you love.

I have multiple sets that should cover any game I play, and yet when new racks show up in the classifieds, I can’t resist adding on!
I justify it thinking, “ What if 30 people suddenly show up and want to play poker? Am I prepared!?!?!” :ROFLMAO:

Your cash set could double as a T1 (or T.50 or T.25) tournament set, in which case 100s could be useful for color-ups or rebuys. People will tell you not to mix cash and tournament and they're right, but in the same vein of "what if 30 people show up?", what if you suddenly have the chance to run a 3 table tournament and don't have a tournament set? Not something to plan on, but for only 20-25 extra chips why not?

I play .25/.50, 8-handed, $50-$100 buyins. We’ve gotten over $2,000 on the table a couple of times, so I’ve gotten some hundreds on the table on rare occasions.
My total bank of $1s, $5s, and $20s is $2200, which should be plenty for my game. But it’s handy to have that barrel of $100s, just in case.

After I posted my query, I went back to my chip bank/allocation spreadsheet. It jives with what you just stated. You've hit on a use case for a $100 chip even in a smaller game. You can get piles on the table. A barrel of color up chips would come in handy in that circumstance.

I knew I could count on you guys to give me a justification to buy more chips.

We use the hell out of $100s, but I can easily relate to your question as I recently pondered the practicality of a $500 chip. While they have seen the felt, only for vanity purposes. There were still $100s available. So, I don’t “need” a $500 any more than you need a $100, from the sound of things. So, I bought a rack and some change. 🤣🤣🤣. This pic was taken before the add on purchases were made, so I’m up to 130 $500 chips.

First, I agree…buy what you love. And you never know when the game grows to the point of needing them is also quite valid. I don’t know what the exact psychological aspect of having them in the chip tray all night is, but I’m telling you there’s a definite effect. The first night I had a few barrels of $500s in the chip tray on the table, we probably had the biggest game we’ve ever played. That night, probably 70% of my $100s were in play vs normally a barrel. So roughly an extra $5k floating around the table. Coincidence…perhaps. But, it’s been 3 weeks in a row now of the same type of thing.

We play a 1/1 game and I have a barrel of $500, which is essentially same case.
Practically we use it as a "show'em" chip - everyone gets one at a start of the night. I was thinking of replacing them with a solid barrel of something and relabeling but then I wouldn't ever get the $500s out of the rack, which would be a shame (playing Tachi Palace)

Oh I like that idea. A show em chip and also a rabbit hunt chip.

Every once in a while someone just has to ask for that rabbit hunt. Then there has to be an "exchange of ideas" about rabbit hunting. Giving everyone a single rabbit hunt chip would be fun for those who enjoy suffering what could have have been and go a long way towards getting over the argument quickly.

And for those of us using casino chips, the hundreds can be a lot more efficient, dollar-wise.
For my set,
my $1 chips cost about five bucks apiece,
my $5 chips cost about ten bucks apiece,
my $20 chips cost about fifteen bucks apiece,
but my $100 chips only cost about $12 apiece.
So if I want to increase my bank, the $100 chip is by far the most cost-effective way to do it.

When stacks get deep, sometimes a rebuy can be best done with 1-2 big chips. The rebuyer then gets change from the biggest stack.

So even if the game is lower stakes, a $100 chip can be useful if the max is $100 or more.

Also can be handy if you have a high hand jackpot to pay out.

Depends on the stakes you normally play.

For instance, at 25¢/50¢ (the blinds we commonly employ at my game) a few $20's might be in people's stacks as the night goes on as people rebuy or add on.

My primary cash set doesn't have a $100:

Don't misunderstand me though... there's absolutely NOTHING wrong with MOAR CHIPZ, but I don't need $100's any more than I'd need $500's or higher.

If budget is a consideration, it's becomes function want versus need.

Nice chips!!
But what about the other end of the spectrum? Do you pull out the 5-cent chips very often?

Not for me. 100 is a tournament denom. Fracs, 1, 5, and 20 are cash. 25, 100, 500, 1k, 5k, 25k are tournament. 1k, 5k, 25k, 100k, 500k, 1mil for "high roller" tournaments (just because).

Future proof the set.

I think there’s a few things to consider.

In 10 years, a $20 bill will be equivalent to $15. In 20 years it’ll be worth like $11. So you’ll likely increase stakes since 0.25/0.50 will end up being today’s micro stakes.

Also if you’re getting a custom set or chips you plan on keeping it’s makes sense to get some higher denoms. You might end up with higher stakes and you’ll also be fighting inflation.

Depending how custom you go, who is to say how long PCF, CPC, Paulson etc will be around for - buy once cry one time baby!

If your chips are more off the shelf widely available and not custom or you plan on selling after a few years, it doesn’t matter and you can add on later.

GL!

One man’s big chip is another man’s workhorse.
💯
The question I have is what's the point of a frac when @Godzilla28 hosts his Clown Game & @RocAFella1, @quintooo @DirtyTIVA have over a rack of $100's plus $500's on the table...shit was that 2 racks of $100's?!?

(I had my mouth piece in, was wearing my helmet & wrapped myself in bubblewrap)

Good question.

The nickels were produced to facilitate a game with what I now term as my "pre-covid crew". Unfortunately, most of them have either moved, are too far away from where I'VE moved, or don't come to social functions any more given they're still afraid of the virus, even today.

The last time those nickels were on the table I think was February of '23. I don't anticipate them being used any time soon and am trying to figure out how I can repurpose them.

Hundos made rebuying easy after I torched the above stack.

If Tina’s get 25 bc cheap.
If Cpc isn’t there no minimum per denom once the MOQ is fulfilled? If so then once again - cheap. Gotta get 5.

Car companies have Halo Cars that are there to keep you interested in the brand and have something to aspire too. I think a Halo Chip is good to have too.

As soon as my biggest chip got into play (I think 2-3) and I only have a barrel I immediately wanted 15 more of that biggest denom and 5 chips of 1 higher denom.

Others have mentioned game
Can grow in stakes or number of tables. Both will push the bank.

I like to have enough chips of every smaller denom to support a second table that I don’t own and don’t have room for but ya know. Just in case. In order to do that I’d have to double my bank and the cheapest way to do tha is more big chips.

Get some hundreds. You’re saving money. :)
