Hello everybody, greetings from Ireland! I joined this forum a recently in the hope of landing a nice/unique set of chips secondhand. Something different to the usual stuff I was seeing on the poker websites I have been looking through. I find myself very drawn to the Paulson casino chips but there is such a huge variety I am a bit lost. There is huge differences in prices between difference ranges. What in your opinion would be a good starting set of these chips? Something stylish but that does not break the bank. I would be looking to buy 300-400 to use in small home games. I am also thinking of a ceramic set but i don't think they have the same WOW factor as some of the clay chips I've been browsing over on this forum. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

HSIs and some of the lesser Jack chips are the best value right now, if you dig the colors....

Are you looking to host cash games or tournaments? The recommendations will vary depending on your preferred usage.

Hi Kaimat, thanks for the reply. I would be mostly playing small single table tournaments with 5-6 friends.

Using initials to a new guy ?
All good! Thanks for that. I've been doing enough browsing to have figured out a few of the acronyms. HSI are the horseshoe Indiana chips I believe?

The real "Wow" starts when you touch them. Get samples.
I see. I'll have to lay my hands on a few samples so. ☺️

I've noticed that they are quite common on the cheaper end of the scale. Do you not dig the colours? What chips are you a fan of?

Everyone's tastes are different. I like them, but some don't. It's about finding what you like and tasting a bit of the buffet before you find the meal you adore.

You'll wanna stick with RHC chips for the cost savings, as the other options have gotten a bit wild lately on values.... But tons of colors in the rainbow of options here....

Yeah I think they're nice too. I'll have to get a few sample sets and see what I like. When you say RHC you are referring to the markings on the mold right?

What's your take on ceramics? Some of the sets look pretty slick. I saw one or two sets that had been sold through ads on the forum that were nice. If you were going to go for a ceramic set what would you go for? In terms of quality and not necessarily style (as that's more subjective). I have heard the Sunfly ones are not bad.

RHC are a wider ringed Paulson chip. The other is called THC, where it's a smaller label and narrower ring. THC is generally liked more, as they hold up better with alot of play. (Mind you, not many of us would play enough games to make a difference. But if your buying casino used, they can hold up better with the same amount of play)

I'm personally not a ceramic fan. As I like retro, I love older Vegas, so clay is my kinda deal. I am also the guy to mills chips here, so I love taking older beat Hotstamps and making customs out of them. It's a cheaper way to make something your own.

The mirage chip is THC, the non marked one is a more used RHC chip.

Honestly, the most important piece of all of this is you enjoying the chips you have. It's very unlikely anyone you play with is going to notice the difference or care. Not to say you shouldn't get any set you want, but that your opinion is the only one that really matters.

Ceramics are nice because they are cheap and they are easy to get. You can buy them straight from a vendor and there is no 'hunting them down'. BRPoker and Apache are both vendors here and where a lot of people start and it covers everything they need.

You can buy clay chips from PCF vendors like the chip room and you can buy casino live chips from other vendors. After that the rabbit hole goes deep and fast and so does the price.

Best of luck and welcome.

Samples waste a lot of money on shipping that you could be spending on chips instead. Especially since you’re in Ireland . As we say in Boston, one of our own. Make a decision on good value paulsons and pull the trigger. No Goats , no glory. slainte

Also check out the Chip Exchange on the vendor listings. They’ve got a few great sales going.

Hello and welcome!

Establish a budget, get the most efficient breakdown of denominations that you need for the games you play (cash or tourney), and pray to be in the right place at the right time!

Thanks a lot for all the great info. Yeah I can see the appeal in the clay chips. They have a lot more character and craftsmanship. I ordered some of the Jack Cincinnati chips from a vendor. I think they look pretty sweet. The higher denominations are fairly saucy price-wise.

I'm not very familiar with milling. Is it removing the old inlay/stamp on a chip and popping in a new one? Could you link some of your work? I'd be interested in taking a look.

Very true. I reached the same conclusion myself and ordered some of the Jack Cincinnati chips. Hopefully they'll be as nice they look in the pics. Slainte to you too!

Nice one. I'll check em out. Cheers.

Cheers, I'd say you need to be quick off the mark to nab the best deals. Things seem to be snapped up fairly quickly. I might buy with a bias for lower denominations as the higher denomination chips seem to go for silly cash. Some of them look so nice though!

Here’s my thought on ceramics. I have a set of Chipco ceramics which in many opinions are the best ceramic chips you can get. However, all my players would rather play with any of the clay sets I own. I love the Chipco chips but they have been idle for some time now.

Thanks for that. Good. Some of the European sellers I looked don't actually list who manufactures their ceramic chips. So they could be coming from anywhere really.

As someone already mentioned, there are still some cash chips from The Chip Room available from their summer sale. Prices are as low as you are likely to find in general while stock lasts.

No. All designs were done by users. I just mill them for a fee
I see. Do they just pop on a sticker to finish them or is it actually inlaid into the chip itself?

I've bought a few from that sale. Thanks for the tip.
